This really a no brainer for me. If the measuring stick is fights up to a common opponent which was Roy Jones jr, then Toney by a landslide. When Hopkins fought Jones he had no legit top level victories. In comparison Toney fought MCcallum 2x,Johnson,Nunn,Barkley,Sosa,PC Williams, and Littles. At 160 a prime and in shape Toney pounds an inexperienced Hopkins.
NUNN ALSO FOUGHT FROM THE OUTSIDE AND USED HIS LEGS ALOT
I know. Your point?
The older version of Hopkins who fights from the outside fought at 160 too.
It was pretty much a shut-out for the first 9 rounds. That's a schooling. Nunn punched himself out a bit because he was landing so easily - that coupled with Toney finding a couple of nice shots in the 9th/10th swung the fight.
My point was that Toney certainly wasn't invincible at 160, which is what was seeming to be implied by some of the other posts. It also took him a couple of fights to squeak past an old Bodysnatcher at the weight.
A younger Hopkins deserves more credit than you're giving him. He wasn't embarrassed by RJJ anywhere near as badly as Toney was at 168.
The question wasn't "a young Hopkins v Toney" so I guess you agree with me that it's a pick 'em.:lol1:

Nunn was KTFO, I guess that was a nice schooling :lol1: Nunn was doing good in the first half of the fight but he was losing the second half of the fight, also Nunn was a great boxer when Toney fought him.
Toney beats the younger Hopkins 10 out of 10 times, the older Hopkins beats Toney 5 out of 10 times.
BTW James Toney was one of the best middleweights I've ever seen.
Who do you think wins this technical fight?
** Toney will be greatly hampered when they have to remove a leg, both breasts and one buttock to make weight.
Hopkins in a shutout!
hopkins did better against RJJ than toney did. Toney in his prime was a tremendous fighter though. I got to give it to hopkins though cause he has fought the better competition hands down
Because his praise is mostly from his 20 title defense and beating Tito and Oscar.
The 20 title defenses were against average competition at best. Tito had some success at Middleweight so its still a good win in my book. But its not a GREAT win because Tito was still a blown up welterweight. Same goes with Oscar, who had no business fighting at Middleweight. He got beat twice by a natural Middleweight in Taylor who is very ordinary.
First of all, 20 consecutive title defenses is a tremendous accomplishment no matter who you are facing, and secondly, I'm not so sure how "average" Bernard's competition was during his string of defenses. Half (10) of those challengers were former, current, or future world champions (WBC, WBA, or IBF), and he went 10-0 against them, knocking out 7 of them. As far as the two bouts with Taylor, I have a tough time saying that Hopkins "lost" those bouts. I guess my main point is that I didn't need B-Hop's dismantling of Tarver to prove to me that he is an all-time great.

Theres no way for me not to be bias with this post because Toney is one of my all time favorite fighters, and I always felt Hopkins was overrated.
So yeah I think Toney decisions the executioner.
