Julio Ceasar Chevez vs. Medrick Taylor
I know that Taylor was getting off a lot of punches in the first 5 or 6 rounds, but they weren't affecting Chevez.
And actually the entire fight Chevez was landing hard punches the entire fight. From the first round, he was trading one for three, but it caught up with Taylor.
Have you ever seen such a young talented fighter just get the boxing taken out of him in a bout? The kid was dominant, quick, agile, and could punch. And after that fight, he just wasn't.
That fight was the most one sided but you are right how it affected Taylor, He was never the same and only won another title on talent alone.
Cintron fought in the 2000 EASTERN U.S. Olympic Trials (losing to Rudy Cisneros), Tyson won several national amateur tournaments (including National JO's, National Golden Gloves and the U.S. Under 19's), and HASIM Rahman had amateur fights. Marciano had much more than just 3 amateur fights and definitely didn't lose all of them, either. Morrison fought in national tournaments, WON the 88 Western Trials and then lost to Mercer in the US Olympic trials the same year (NOT in the finals of the NGG). Hopkins fought amateur, mostly as a junior olympian (under 16).
I still think Rahman had only like 11 or so amateur fights. Thanks for correcting me on Morrison. I always thought it was strange he claimed little amatuer experience when he had tons actually. Marciano had less than 20 Amatuer fights though.
Dwight Braxton had no amateur experience before he came to the paid ranks.
Braxton Who later became Dwight Muhammad Qawi had none as was a former street brawler. Also Billy Conn had no amatuer fights.
Tommy Morrison had limited amature experiance............
He learned his trade in toughmen contests
Morrison always used to say this, but it is not true. He had over 200 Amatuer fights and fought in the Finals of the Nationals Golden Gloves against Ray Mercer. He used this lie as a gimmick.
bones adams, i'm pretty sure he didn't have any amateur fights, i think he started as a pro at the age of 15, i could be wrong but i remember on some show he was fighting in that they said that he lied about his age so he could fight as a pro for money..........
there are a few others that i can't think of right now..
I had heard because he was from KY he had little to no amatuer experience and he did turn pro that young.
I always cite Marcos Villasana....as one of the strongets-chinned fighters in history.
This guy took the best punches of guys like Antonio Esparragoza, Azumah Nelson, Jeff Fenech (when Jeff still banged hard), & Paul Hodkinson, without ever going down.
He has an all-time great chin, but is quite underappreciated/unknown.
Nice post I has send the Fenech fight which was probably Jeffs best work and he took alot of shots.
in slow mo replays it showed that that the first punch that landed on seldon hit the top of his head. it was a legitimate knock down.
That quote could be the biggest Tyson nuthugging comment I have ever read on this forum. It was far from a legit knockdown.:nonono:
Chuvalo had never been dropped in his 93 fight career, he went in against the likes of Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Terrel, Patterson, Folley.. he had one of the greatest chins in history, there's no doubt about it.
Chuvalo also holds a win over Jerry Quarry who could swat once in awhile. The shots Tex Cobb took against Shavers and Holmes has to but him in the running for the best chin.
Toney doesnt get hit as much, and rarley gets hit totally flush.
I dont think hes number 1 all time.
LaMotta was a master at riding with a shot and taking away the power on it.
So we have to wait till your book comes out to hear about it??? Give us a little detail about it.
I'll save you the suspense. The crowd was hugely pro Maske and Scully lost the fight. The end.
I tried to unsuccessfully bang this German girl like ten years ago. She knew nothing about sports, but she was very familar with who Maske was. That just shows how big he was in Germany. He had a great Southpaw jab, but kind of a straight up European style. He was very effective as a fighter for along time.
He has become massively overrated and revered. The truth is he was a terrible human being and he had no compassion for anyone except Gerald. Lady Fate is a cold bitch if you screw with her.
Everyone expects Cotto to win, or at least be a very difficult fight for Margarito, but how funny would it be if Margarito lands a big hook or right hand, right off the bat, and knocks Cotto out in less than a minute?
Or more realistically, just stops him early, within four rounds.
Hey I respect Cotto, he's a warrior who comes to close the show, but Margarito is one of my favorites and the stink of hate over this guy is becoming overwhelming.
Some guys spend more energy bringing down fighters they dislike than supporting the ones they're fans of.
This is not so far fetched to me. I would not be surprised. Their is alot of Margarito hate on this board.
lol!!! It is a very good post. Nice analogy using Lacy and Calzaghe. Sorry I left you out. :)
I for one think boxing is the only sport where guys from the past can succeed. Boxers thrive on hunger as seen with the emergence of the Soviet Fighters and fighters from Third World countries like Pac. To not think these guys were tougher than the babied fighters of today is rediculous. Just like your granddad could probably kick your ass, most old school fighters would have an edge over the new guys. Most don't agree with my opinion but there grit and determination goes along way in the ring and would in any era.
Guys that's a clip of him fooling around shadowboxing. Means shit. Greb didn't even train or shadowbox seriously that much, he mostly sparred and fought endlessly. From what I've heard he barely even hit bags, just other people.
Also to say Greb stylistically loses to Hagler is a joke. Show me footage of him fighting a pro bout and then talk about his style.
I dunno how the fight would go between these two rugged middleweights with iron chins, but they were both great. Greb of course has the better resume and was a better P4P fighter (beating quality heavier men on a consistent basis).
Any fighter that can defeat Gene Tunney is something spectacular.
the 1980's had

azumah nelson
How the fuck is this not the best era kid. Let me guess the great willard and sharkey are awesome right?
Those guys are all bums Compared to Mayweather though.
Floyd Senior is a clown. He's a great trainer? Other than him constantly SAYING IT what makes him so great? Think about that. It CAN'T BE his work with Oscar because I think Oscar looked better BEFORE he got with Senior. Remember the Sturm fight? And don't even tell me it was his work with Floyd JR. because number one Floyd Sr. wasn't even around for most of his later and amateur and pro career and, 2, Roy Jones SR. developed Roy, Gainer, Arthur Williams AND "Cool" Vince Phillips and is as great as anybody in terms of skills and knowledge... he just never talked about it like Mayweather does. I am laughing when I see SO MANY people claim Mayweather Sr. is so great because of nothing other than he tells them he is. He is almost unintelligible as it is and in the promotion for a fight like this he would make a huge fool of himself and take away from Oscar. As a trainer... if he wants to take ALL the credit, literally, for Oscar being able to beat Jr. because of his input then he should take the blame for Oscar losing to Sturm and Hops. Also food for thought...Senior talks so highly of his defensive system, like it is the force or something, like it is a top secret boxing genius defense system that rules the world... well, I asked Marlon Starling (who beat Sr, twice) about it and he laughed and said "Well, I can tell you that I didn't have any trouble hitting him if that's what your asking." He then showed me the very simple counter move that he used to open Mayweather up and hit him with straight right hands over and over. I am sure Oscar will figure it out all on his own
Mayweather has hyped himself into the public believing he is so great. I agree with what you say 100%. He makes Oscar look bad (I have never been a DeLaHoya fan either so it didn't take much). An unloyal guy like Oscar deserves a guy like Floyd Sr. come to think of it. The Magic man was one hell of a fighter, I always admired.
I heard he hit Mitch Green and ran.
Probably so cause Green could have had his boys mess Tyson up pretty good if he wanted. He was one of the inspirations for the movie The Warriors and had tons a ganstas that followed him.
i wish Felix Savon would have turned pro... do you guys think he would have beat Lewis?
Savon was knocked out numerous times as an amatuer and I don't think he had the chin to compete as a pro. Roberto Balodo who died in a wreck in Cuba was the best Heavyweight threat if he turned pro imo. With Venezuela president Chavez wanting to go to a socialist economy will the Venezuelan fighter even fight anymore soon.
That would be nice if he wasn't 5'8 160 pounds.
I think it's safe to say a street fighter can't really be taken seriously unless they're a heavyweight. That's the supreme weight and that's that.
Big guy wins 10/10 times given the same level of opposition.
I have seen a 5'4 140 or less pound Hawaiian guy take down three guys at least six foot tall after he was stabbed by a screw driver by one of them. He routinely knocked out 6'4 guys with one shot and was a legend where I lived.
He just beat a boatload of solid A- contenders as well as one of the greatest heavyweights ever in a near prime Ali. Wins over guys like Chuvalo, Quarry, Bonavena, Machen, Mathis etc. compliment the Ali masterpiece nicely.
We're all biased of course but I just watch Frazier and feel like I'm watching someone who'd be a handful for almost any man in history while with Foreman I feel like he was fighting weaker and often undersized opposition. There is also the fact that he outright admits to ducking Quarry himself which does not sit well with ranking him above Frazier for me.
Foreman has called Quarry the Greatest fighter to never win a title. For some reason Jerry was in Foremans head.
:pat: Shit. He was mostly a heavy...the other guys moved up to fight him.
My bad. For some reason I thought he was middle/light heavy like the rest of murderers row.
...and I should have thrown Walcott's name into that mix.
This is Yogi's department :puppy_dog
.....but I'm getting better. :)
Most people don't know who Ray is so it doesn't matter much.
