On Saturday, March 28th, the WBA/WBO unified flyweight champion Juan Francisco "Gallo" Estrada of Mexico will defend his belts against the Filipino Rommel Asenjo at the Poliforum Zamna in Merida, Mexico. WBO appointed the referee José Rivera, and the judges Roberto Ramírez (PUR) and Joe García (US). The supervisor will be Rolando Marcos Hermoso.
The Championships Committee of the World Boxing Association has ordered the immediate negotiations for a mandatory fight between WBA 'regular' heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev and unbeaten challenger Lucas Browne, who is the highest rated (4) available contender in the division, and the Intercontinental champion. The time allotted for reaching an agreement is 30 days, with a purse bid being called if no deal is reached. Chagaev has been the regular heavyweight title owner since last July 6 when he beat Fres Oquendo.
The super featherweight champion of the World Boxing Association, Japan's Takashi Uchiyama, have been promoted to the status of "super champion." The decision was endorsed by the WBA Championships Committee, chaired by Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, and communicated to Uchiyama (18-0-1, 18 KO’s). Uchiyama has been the owner of the 130 lbs super featherweight belt since January 11, 2010 when he defeated Juan Carlos Salgado by knockout in Tokyo.
The legal committee of the World Boxing Association has notified Cuban heavyweight Luis Ortiz (21-0, 18KOs), and his team, that a decision was rendered to remove his status as being the interim champion, based on championship rules of the sanctioning body. According to the State Athletic Commission of Nevada, Ortiz tested positive for a banned steroid in the aftermath of his first round knockout win over Lateef Kayode in September 2014. The fight was later changed to a no decision.
With a split decision, Colombian Liliana Palmera successfully defended for the first time her interim-bantamweight title of the World Boxing Association on Friday night at the Coliseum Mario Leon Cereté in Colombia. She faces challenger Alys "La China" Sánchez in the main event, held as tribute to former champion Miguel "Happy" Lora, and was attended by the Mayor of Cereté, Francisco Padilla, and WBA vice president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza.
During a courtesy visit to Marca magazine in Spain, by the WBA President Gilberto Mendoza and Vice President Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, they made it clear that they are working in towards spreading boxing to all continents. President Mendoza discussed the meetings and projects between the WBA, WBC and IBF: "the cooperative relationship between the organizations is unique. We are trying to create tournaments where the champions of each organization compete to have the unique champion as we want".
Melva Santos will be the authority in the ring when Liliana Palmera and Alys “La China” Sánchez fight on Friday, February 6, at the Coliseum Mario de León Guzmán, in Cereté, Colombia. Palmera will defend for the first time the World Boxing Association interim super Bantam 122 lbs belt she won on points from Venezuelan Ana Lozano in October.
The World Boxing Association Championships Committee has stripped Venezuelan Nehomar Cermeno of his Super Bantamweight 122 lbs. interim championship according to their regulations. The rules applied were C10, C13, C14, C16, C46 and C47. Cermeno has fifteen months without defending the belt won in Panama on August 10, 2013.
Jamaican Nicholas Walters will attempt to continue writing his name in the boxing history books on October 18th, not only in his country but worldwide. “I am very hungry and I am confident I will defeat Nonito Donaire, I believe I will knock him out in 5 or 6 rounds”. Walters, the 'regular' World Boxing Association featherweight world champion will fight the undisputed champion, Donaire, at the StubHub Center in Carson. “He says I have not fought anybody and that he has knocked out more opponents than I have, and I say, sure but none of them at 126 lbs.”
The World Boxing Association championships committee has ordered 'regular' heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev and the interim-champion Luis Ortiz of Cuba to begin negotiations for an upcoming title fight. The negotiations period shall last 30 days, beginning today. In the event both parties do not reach an agreement, the WBA shall order a purse bid. Chagaev has been the champion since June 6, 2014 and has a record of 23-2-1, 20 KO’s, while Ortiz became the interim champion on September 11 with a first round TKO of Lateef Kayode. He has a record of 22-0, 19 KO’s.
