Canelo Alvarez, Christian Mbilli make weight for Saturday title fight

In a subdued ceremonial weigh-in Friday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Christian Mbilli both made weight for their super middleweight title fight to be broadcast from Kingdom Arena on DAZN PPV.

France’s Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs), the titleholder, weighed in at 167.8 pounds, while Mexico's Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) – not lately accustomed to playing the role of challenger, hit the scales at 167.6 pounds, both under the 168-pound super middleweight limit.

A quiet weigh-in event, in this instance, was likely welcomed by all. The “Mexico vs. The World” card, which has controversially gone on as planned despite deep conflict in the area, has pushed on through a week that included the issuing of “hostile aerial threat” warnings followed by missile strikes (which were subsequently intercepted).

One fighter, Lindolfo Delgado, chose to remain in the United States and forgo a title shot rather than risk the surrounding violence in Riyadh.

Meanwhile, the remainder of the card appears to be on schedule. In the co-main event, super middleweight belt holder Jaime Munguia (46-2, 35 KOs) weighed 167.4 pounds, while challenger Nikita Zon (12-0-1, 10 KOs) checked in at 167.5 pounds. Featherweight titleholder Rafael Espinoza (28-0, 24 KOs) scaled at 125.8 pounds, while his challenger, Ricardo Blandon (21-6, 14 KOs), came in exactly on weight at 126.0 pounds.
