I suppose if you are lifting weights to gain mass - as in eating high calorie diets and lifting heavy weights with low reps - then you might lose some speed. But just look at Mike Tyson, that guy had huge muscles but was still pretty quick.
But if you are using weights to tone up your muscles and their endurance and power - by using lower weights and higher reps - you shouldn't lose any/much speed.
I personally use low weights and perform the sets explosively, but thats just me lol.
    Hope this helps some.

what danny said. you could still heavy with low reps to gain mores trength but just keep your kcal intake as well as protein intake the same as usual and you shouldnt gain mass. i personally would still use the most weight i can handle for 4x8-12 and move up in weight as i can handle. i enjoy the muscle endurance and strength you gain from adding a few more reps and still trying to use as much weight as you can. but do what you feel works best for you. some swear by the 4x8-12 SETxREP range and some swear by the 5x5 range or 4x5.

yeah low reps high load is the way to go, since this way you won't stimulate protein synthesis that much but you will learn to use more motor neuron at once, thus improving speed and strength.

You should do high reps low load if you've been doing a lot of cardio lately and you are worried about muscolar catabolism.

looks like just about everyone here doesn't know anything about lifting weights.

              Body building slows you down.

Body builders don't lift max weight, they do reps of 10.

Body builders eat massive amounts of calories a day. Body builders put much more weight on their frames than they were meant to hold.

The biggest display of ******ity on this board is when we see guys like Roy Jones, Pacquiao, Gamboa, Hatton..etc all quick fighters who frequently lift weights or use resistance trianing (which is weight lifting btw as well). And retain incredible amounts of speed.

Power lifters lift low reps, high weight. are they big? NO are they slow? NO. They can lift massive amounts of weight in a short period of time. This won't build endurance but it gives you explosive strength, speed and power. It's up to you to build your endurance in other ways.

If you are using something with weight to build strength, that is resistance training. That is exactly what weight lifting is. You could get big from tossing a medicine ball around all day if you ate enough.

Excellent post. Boxing seems to be one of the only sports where the old myths of weight training still persist.

When done properly on targeting fast twitch muscle growth it could add some benefit.

I wish I had the time to lift weights, but I train 6 times out of the week and don't have the time since Sunday is my rest day.
