    • Both sports need to be respected. I train in MMA, and we have boxers come in our gym a couple of times a week for sparring. They won't let us use anything but punches and definitely have a hands advantage over our mma guys. Watching two of the boxers go at it is a beautiful thing. But respect also needs to be given to MMA. Sure, a boxer would crush an MMA guy in a boxing match with mma gloves (once they learned the differences between using the two gloves. Using the two gloves are much different.) But you are forgetting that boxers would have to totally change their footwork because of kicks, punches, knees, elbows and takedowns. And once someone with excellent Muay Thai skills got a boxer in a Thai clinch, it'd be lights out for the boxer because there would be no referee to separate them. Heck, a guy with excellent leg kicks could stay out of the boxer's range, rip his leg to shreds with kicks, and all of a sudden, the boxer doesn't have any power to push off his lead foot, which severely impacts the force of his punches. And a kick to the head gives off much, more pounds of pressure than a punch, plus the kick will land harder because it's hitting with the bone instead of a padded glove. One of the boxers who visits our gym is deciding to play around with mma. He is a top 25 ranked heavyweight and has fought on EPSN and HBO many times. He's starting to do some kickboxing type sparring now and is having a lot of trouble with leg kicks and looks like a fish out of water. He just flows and is beautiful to watch when he's boxing, but defending kicks really will mess up your rhythm. Also, he started taking grappling classes and it's a VERY humbling experience for him. I will admit that the it takes much more skill and athleticism to make it to the big leagues and there is a much deeper skill set in boxing than in MMA. But the level of of the guys at the top are near the same. And if punching power in boxing is the end-be-all in a fight, why does every UFC champ, except for one, have a better ground game than stand-up? Let's ask Shannon Briggs what he thinks about MMA:

"I was actually one of the first guys approached by the UFC in early 2000, I won't say I was one of the very first but one of the first boxers. And I was affiliated with the guys at American Top Team, and I still consider myself a friend and team member, and I went to Vegas to speak with Dana White, and they wanted me to fight the champion at the time, who I think was Tim Sylvia. But we couldn't agree on the terms, for what it was worth to put my body on the line against an MMA grappler. I mean that would be like me trying to play golf. Now if they were in the boxing arena that would be different. But I felt that I was worth more than what they offered. Then I went to Japan to do the K1, and I got the **** kicked out of me, but I still beat him in the first round, but I can still feel it to this day, I mean sometimes just the thought of it hurts. So that's not my forte, I'm going to keep my big ass out of it. It would take me 20 years for me to become a good MMA fighter. I don't have that kind of time on my side. I'm sticking with what I know. I have all respect for it, but it's like me trying to become a surfer right now, it just wouldn't happen. I would hate to meet one of those guys in an alley though."

Let's ask Floyd's father, who is a world renowned trainer, how he thinks his son will do in MMA.

"He needs to leave that **** alone," "I'm telling you, he could forget all of that stuff being cute and how you supposed to hit somebody with a check hook. Man, them mother****er's going to take that check hook mother****er and squeeze your guts out. I'm just being real with you man. Floyd about to get his ass tore up man," he explains. "He ain't about to whoop them mother****ers. He can forget that ****! Man, let me tell you something, they don't even need a referee for this **** right here. They ain't going to need a referee because he's going to tap his own self out if he's able. They going to break his ****ing limbs. One of them mother****ers hit him upside his ****ing head and he may never be the same. I'm just telling the truth. This ain't no ****ing boxing; ain't none of these mother****ers scared of his ass.

MMA fighters respect the boxing world, so I don't see why some boxers feel threatened by them. It's a good time to get in MMA, so if you think your boxing will take very far, take a free week of classes at your local MMA gym. That being said, I'd like to see someone like Kermit Citron get in MMA. He was a very good wrestler in high school and he is aggressive with some real knockout power.

      • I don't see anything entertaining about 2 sweaty man wrestling on the ground as if it were in a mud wrestling competition. There is a reason boxers are paid far MORE than Mixed Martial Artists. This reason is that boxing is more popular and by far a more respected sport. Half the ground moves they do in MMA look like sex poisitons. Keep it in the bed room.

Kermit Cintron was a well established wrestler and he took up the sport of boxing.A good boxer at super welterwight(154lbs). He challenged Sherk to a MMA match and Sherk IMMEDIATELY said No Thank You.

If you like MMA go to a MMA forum ,this is a boxing forum.

        • I don't respect MMA/UFC the fact being that they make these reality TV shows to gain recognition from young ignorant teens. To be a boxer you got to work hard. There is no TV show you can be on to gain recognition and it sure as hell doesn't take a few months to go from a starter to a professional fighter. That is why I don't like UFC. UFC is a company not a sport. Enough said.

have you heard of this reality show called "The CONTENDER". I believe that was boxing??? "The Ultimate Fighter" is the MMA version of it and is going to have a 10th season....no need to guess why...
Those taking part in the shows already have a pro record, not a complete beginner like you said.

Boxer BOX, MMA fighters FIGHT (with some safety rules). Enough said. Two completely different sports.

Yes, UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) is a company, MMA is a sport. Strange that you need to even mention that.....

            • Sherk is a roid monkey who cares what he says or does. He has more juice flowing through him than a pro wrestler.

                yea complete records of 10-11

i laugh at the pathetic records of mma fighters. The heavyweight champion is 3-1 or something. What a joke. Alot of hardwork to get there im sure, he used to play football and roidwrestle. If you want to be a World Champion professional boxer you need to dedicate a lifetime to the sport not 3 years.

MMA is a pathetic excuse for a sport, it is a company and half the fighters have no real skill or talent. Like previously stated this is a boxing forum. MMA fighters or tapout wearing posers please GTFO---------->

hmmm... i guess everyone is entitled to their opinion. I like both sports but i just don't see why boxing fans and boxers in general feel threatened and always tries be belittle and put down MMA.

Why not bash kickboxing, Muay thai, Judo, TKD, kung fu etc...
Well, maybe they didn't do so well as MMA....
