    Weeellll, wait a minute, Bobby.

Clay was a member of the Nation of Islam by the time he fought Cooper; and that story was about to break on the eve of his first fight with Liston.

If he'd lost to Cooper by kayo, the interest in a Liston-Clay fight would have depreciated significantly because Cassius would have been shown up as a mouthy kid who was vulnerble; if Cooper could stop him, Liston would kill him.

Remember, everybody thought Liston would kill him anyway; but the kid had appeal with the American public as a flashy former Olympic Gold medalist with a gift for gab and a great gimmick for "calling the round". If he'd lost to Cooper, the Liston fight would have gone in the crapper; and sooner or later his religious convictions would have been found out....and he would have been black-balled for the good of the American public, just like he was stripped of his WBA belt essentially on that basis when he signed to rematch Liston. And,that's not even mentioning the fact that if he'd refused to take the step to go to Vietnam, nobody would have cared if he'd gone to jail; and he wouldn't have had the money for the appeals process.

Ali might never have become world champ if Cooper had knocked him out.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense, America was a ***** for blacks in the 60's and boxing did whatever the **** it wanted to. Cooper landed the punch of his career on Clay's chin and Clay was damn lucky the bell and Dundee saves his ass. Many people already didn't like him, and if he had lost then nobody would have wanted to fight him. By the time he might have gotten a shot, he might have been off to jail. I hadn't thought about it much lol

I'm glad K-Dogg and Hollister got my point about Ali.

In a defferent topic is anybody watching the fight for the WBC HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE ELIMINATOR in Sep 02? I wanna put some cash as beteagle.com has some odds on, but does anybody know anything about Samuel Peter? He is totally unknown to me and he apears as the favorite

lennox was a good heavyweight champion, that's it... he did nothing spectacular while he was champion, except have two devestating one punch knockout losses.

Honestly, I'm picking Peter based on the fact that he is a "real" heavyweight puncher; and if Toney fights him the same way he's fought in his last three fights...aka laying on the ropes and countering.....it's suicide for a former middleweight.

If Toney comes in around 220 and looks to be in good shape, I give him a better chance of winning; but if he comes in like he has been and tries to rely on his skill to save him against this monster, I fail to see how he can win.

I have been wrong before, of course; but Toney winning against a hungry, young, big-punching contender is just hard for me to envision.

Peter, in a nutshell, is a poor-man's George Foreman at this point. He's crude; but powerful, has a concrete jaw and concrete in his fists. He's not even in the same zip-code as Toney from a skill perspective; but Toney's not even in his solar-sytem power-wise.

              Hope that helps.

Lewis will go down as top 20 heavyweight champion of all time. His era is relatively weak but he still beat everybody.

Just lends to the old addage that "everything happens for a reason". Take one dominoe out of the chain, and you get a different result.

Thanks for the tip K-DOGG . I do think Peter has a much better chance taking in what you said and some other info I have read. I do think that it's gonna be a long time before Heavyweight boxing becomes as exciting as it use to be tho!!!
