They didn't fail because both of them were WBA world champion. Maidana beat the sh it out of Broner to win a world welterweight title and Lucad won a vacant WBA world welterweight title that he soon lost to Pacquiao.

As far as I understand, they are both the same belts at boxrec. Same lineage, same belt.

Vyacheslav Senchenko was elevated from (Regular) champion to full champion after Mosley was stripped of the (Super) championship and Senchenko beat Motoki Sasaki. Senchenko then defended his WBA championship twice against Navarro and Avendano before losing it to Paulie Malinaggi. Malinaggi defended it against Cano and then lost it to Broner. Broner lost it on his first defense to Maidana, who lost it to Mayweather. Mayweather was elevated from WBA to WBA (Super) because he was already the WBC champion at the time, and when a WBA championship is unified it is automatically elevated to (Super) status.

Lucas can still can back in shape. He’s not far off from boxing. His last fight was 2 yrs ago. Maidana is far from shape. Hard to tell which weightclass he would fight when he comes back, maybe MW.

He was a regular champion. The Super champion at that time was Floyd, the same Super belt Manny is holding right now after beating Thurman.

The belt Maidana won off Broner was the WBA regular belt, the same belt which Ugas holds right now.

You have to treat the WBA Regular belt as some sort of interim belt.

Maidana was upgraded to WBA Super champion, he then fought Floyd and lost the Super belt. Thurman won the vacant regular WBA belt one month before Maidana lost his super belt to Mayweather.

Maidana was technically super champion regardless of how long he had it. Thurman was regular champion in April and Maidana “super” in May.

When Mayweather retired, Thurman was upgraded to Super and the regular belt became vacant and picked up by Matthysse.
