DAZN being cheap, don't want to pay Canelo full price for next fight

Canelo understands the current climate we are living in. Without a live gate DAZN doesn't stand a chance of matching his guarantee.

The upside of this is it's only temporary and he is still working and has a job. That's more than what 40 million Americans can say.

If DAZN goes out of business, that would make Canelo a free agent. That is probably a good thing for Canelo. The sooner he gets free from DAZN and Golden Boy the better. He can either promote his own fights, perhaps in partnership with another promoter, or sign outright with one of the major promotion companies. There are plenty of others who would pay big bucks to secure Canelo's services and his brand. I must say that I had high hopes for DAZN, but they seem to run by dolts.

You're right. However, I just wonder how many subscribers do DAZN have remaining to help pay Canelo's guarantee with so many boxing fans worldwide being either unemployed or furloughed? I know I allowed mine to expire back in April without renewing it. $100 is lot to ask of boxing fans during this pandemic.

I suppose they could be dumb enough to think they would turn a profit on Canelos deal, but if they actually thought that, then maybe they need new leadership.......


Edit: On 2nd thought, perhaps it wasnt so far fetched an idea. Assume Canelo fights 2x a year, thats a $70 million outlay for DAZN. If Canelo drives a million subs a year (not an unreasonable goal), thats $100 million annually in revenue, less the production expenses. They key is that those have to be annual subs though, and not just monthly buys in the 2 months that he fights.....

Canelo is just the special menu for purchasing. Your target example makes sense, but keep in mind that there are purchases each day for DAZN that have nothing to do with boxing retention. They cater to other sports. So imagine all the other fight dates from GBP and Matchroom. The daily purchasing of subs for all its sports is what makes revenue justifiable in paying Canelo. He is one of their main ambassadors/investments. But let’s be realistic, DAZN secures rights for the biggest sport in the world, football. That a completely different audience and metric. DAZN Global is the revenue, not just the DAZN USA market.

The politics at play and influence in those board meetings has me to believe that an influencer is saying that Canelo’s opponents are “bad.” I take that’s Eddie Hearn. Eddie Hearn is trying to mess with the GBP portfolio and sneak in Matchroom exclusively. He even made headlines recently he wants to run boxing like the UFC. If he truly means that he’s doing dirty deeds to mess with Canelo business since we know Oscar and Eddie have had tabs each other the last 2 years within DAZN.
