Floyd vs Manny, a historical perspective.

Every day someone who has me on ignore makes a new thread discussing who will be remembered and who will be forgotten.

As one of the few history buffs around here who has actually read a book or two let me ask you all how long you think it will be before Floyd-Manny comparisons stop?

    Never.

Floyd will never pull ahead of Manny. Manny will never enjoy an era when folks see him and think little of Floyd. It's never happening.

You know how I know it'll never happen? In all the 3k years of boxing history there's not a single rival untied to the rivalry.

    It has never happened.

Jake Kilrain did far less to be remembered, but he is. Only because he was once Sullivan's rival. Not for very long, not very successfully, but it happened, and he is remembered for that alone.

Theaganese can not be discussed without Euthymos

Diongetes and Herakles ( A real one named after the mythical)

    Mendoza and Jackson

    Taylor and Broughton

Johnson and Burns .....No one remembers Tommy for his 13 consecutive lineal title defenses son'd ONLY by Ali and Louis. They remember Burns because he was Johnson's rival.

Need it closer to home? Ali, Frazier, Foreman, can not be separated. Tyson, Holy, Lennox, can not be separated. Louis, Walcott, Charles.

Oh but give it 10, 20, 100, 1000 years. That's when Floyd's name won't be dropped the moment Pac-Man is brought up. Sure. Just like how I can make a thread about Sullivan and no one will bring up Jake....it could happen, it won't but it could.

    It’s because:

1)Floyd didn’t fight Manny in his prime. He waited it out until Manny had already been domesticated by Marquez. Then he finally agreed to fight him.

2)Floyd didn’t beat Manny convincingly. It was more of a default decision on points. Nothing too memorable from Floyd’s end.

Floyd is older than Manny, and was WAY farther past his prime when they fought. And he won easily.

Floyd hasn't fought a real fight in four years, Manny is still a champ. Who waited whom out?

2)Floyd beat Manny convincingly. It was a classic masterclass display of outboxing an opponent.
        Fixed it for you!

Floyd looked so past it after the maidana fights, with Roach noting that his legs were gone. What we watched that night was to fighter past their primes, that let politics get in the way of fighting earlier. Each camp and promoters were at fault

100%! both parties are to blame for not giving us the defining fight of that era when the fighters were at their peaks.

The reason the debate rages on so much is we never got the opportunity to find out who was better prime for prime.

I always felt Mayweather would have won but that’s merely an opinion.

I think people are well within their right to say Pacquiao is greater than Mayweather or vice versa. Both had or our still having ATG careers, ranking one slightly below the other is hardly an insult.
