Yesterday I watched 20 year old Mike Tyson fighting Cuban journeyman Jose Ribalta. Ribalta is 6’6”, and weighed 211 at the time. Mike won all but one round, and knocked Jose down three times during the ten round contest. Fight was stopped a little early. Ribalta showed some decent skills, and actually fought Tyson, unlike some others who went the distance with Mike. Now, Tyson wasn’t at his peak, but he was close enough. How would a 6’9” monster with actual skills and ability have fared? I don’t think Tyson would’ve been able to handle the size discrepancy, not with the add-ons.Mike Tyson was a one-off genetic anomaly. There has never been another guy built like him who could move and punch with such explosive force and accuracy. But would he have have been able to do what he did against opponents who were not only huge, but smart with it, like Fury, Lewis and the Klit bros?
I'm not sure about that. (I know Mike lost to Lennox, but I'm talking about prime Mike Tyson)Comment

185lb, 37 year old Henry Cooper dropped Ali a lot harder.
216lbs, btw, is around what Usyk was entering the ring at as a CW.Last edited by kafkod; 05-04-2020, 02:25 PM.Comment

Joe Louis stopped Carnera in 6th. Carnera was huge compared to Louis.
No guys, sorry, I don`t believe Fury would walk through Ali or Louis like that. I actually believe he could lose on 15 rounds.Comment

I don't remember ever seeing that fight, but I just had a quick look and it's up on YT. I'll watch it later. Yeah, but you can’t compare Carnera’s skills and ability with those of Fury. Not even close. And as big as Primo was, he was still three inches shorter than Fury. “Walking through” isn’t the choice of words I’d use; but I simply don’t believe either Louis or Ali could’ve handled the difference in size, not with Tyson’s other traits.Comment

It was a ridiculous argument by Nazeem.

No prob. I’d be interested in knowing what you think. I’m a big believer in Tyson’s prime years, but I also think he’s overrated by the vast majority. Watching that Ribalta fight only convinces me further. Sure, Mike won without too much trouble, but that was against a tall but lanky journeyman. What about a world class big man? And, by the way, in a 2014 interview, where Tyson ranked his best opponents in various categories, Mike rated Ribalta as having the best chin and as being the strongest he fought.Comment

I could see how Ali, with his high ring IQ, mobility and blinding hand speed, might beat Fury on points, though it definitely wouldn't be an easy fight for him. But Louis would be too small and comparatively slow footed to cope with a giant "mover" like Fury.
Carnera was huge compared to Louis, but smaller, much slower, and nowhere near as skilled as Fury.Comment
