Very skilled fighter but didn’t put his foot on the gas and really show out in any of his big fights and often did “just enough” to win. I respect his skills but after watching his fights I never thought to myself “wow I need to see this guy again”.

I wouldn’t put him in the same sentence as Mayweather to be honest. Real good fighter but I was never crazy about him and I don’t think he lived up to his potential. Even early in his career he was struggling with guys than an elite/special fighter would’ve beat easy. He was dominating Williams and was still backing away and being extra cautious which sums him up to me. Even in his other losses while you can argue them, but you still have to admit he could’ve done more, and didn’t “take the fight” like you have to when it’s at that level.

I respect guys who hit and don’t get hit but there’s a “balance” the truly elite fighters have when it comes to that, and to me Lara always struggled with that. Like he could embarrass a guy whenever he let his hands go and still somehow lose the round. I’d say he’s a strong B level fighter, and that’s no insult at all. Not many A level fighters around.

I'd say he got the results of a B level fighter while being an A level fighter in ability.

I think that was hardwired in him by the Cuban amateur system.

Very reductionist and silly statement. He came to win, he showed that by outboxing all of those fighters.

To be clear I saw him lose 7-5 to Canelo...but point being is that being a 'boring' no-English-speaking Cuban, he got no favors in his fights.

One of my favorites to watch...my only issue with him is he would tend to piss away rounds and make fights closer than they should have been.
Yeah you're right, his one major fault is dithering too much in close fights that he easily could've taken without much doubt.

I can agree with that. I think he had all the ability but never mastered that “balance” between offence and defence. Still, I thought he clearly beat Williams and came close against Canelo.

I don't have a problem with that assessment, he never made scoring for him too easy in his bigger fights that's for certain.

One of Lara’s clearest faults was that he never developed any real inside game. An opponent would close in, Lara would cover up and wait for the barrage to be over before throwing another punch. Barely ever threw anything other than a one-two. One of the most skilled yet limited fighters I’ve ever seen.

But with lara most of the time he just did enough and it cost him. Never stepped on the gas.
Floyd Mayweather vs Canelo Alvarez had 116-112 and 113-113 scorecards.
