For all we know, not wearing the seat belt probably saved his life. He could have been smashed inside the car strapped down since it had no roof as it spun and hit the ground

I agree with you.

I'd naturally always advocate wearing a seatbelt but sometimes they have counterinuitive outcomes too. They have been known to ruin bowels or cause paralysis.
