Canelo was a huge signing for boxing. Boxing is still a niche sport in America. Boxing on an app is even nicher (is that a word?) In the grand scheme of sports it's not a big deal. But it's a good start but DAZN is going to run into problems with customers who are technologically illiterate.
As boxing fans we're used to finding streams. If you took NFL/NBA/NHL/MLB off TV and their fans had to find a stream they'd go crazy. Cable/Satellite companies still make a killing selling sports packages so fan can watch different games.
For those of you not in America: I'm from Detroit but live in Cincinnati. If I wanted to watch the Detroit Lions play on Sunday I'd have to buy an NFL subscription package from the satellite company because they only show the local and regional games on TV. Unless it's a nationally televised game. And that's rare. So my point is most sports fans don't use apps to watch games that aren't local or regional. They buy the subscription from the cable/satellite provider
But us boxing fans, we know how to find any fight we want to see. We're far ahead of the curve than other sports fans. DAZN will have to educate fans about the app. If you tell a casual boxing fan to download the app on their phone the response you're going to get is "I'm not watching boxing on my phone". This sounds foreign to us because we're used to finding a stream on a phone or computer and mirroring it to our TV. But the average sports fan doesn't have to do that. That is a HUGE barrier DAZN will have to overcome. They have to find a way to educate the average fan on how to mirror from their phone to their TV. Unless they have a firestick/roku. If I were them I'd push the firestick/roku because it's the easiest way to go.
Another thing is we're (Americans) lazy. We want it now and we want it at a push of the button. We don't feel we should have to buy 3rd party devices to facilitate an app we're paying for. Trust me on this one. I installed residential cable for 10 years. Customers felt they shouldn't have to buy an HDMI splitter to hook up the cable box even though their devices are taking up all the HDMI ports on their TV.
So from my point of view and being in the field for over 10 years:
1.Customers are ****** when it comes to technology.
2. Customers are ****** when it comes to technology.
Until DAZN comes pre-installed on smart TV's they'll be fighting an never ending battle to educate ****** customers.
