Canelo was a huge signing for boxing. Boxing is still a niche sport in America. Boxing on an app is even nicher (is that a word?) In the grand scheme of sports it's not a big deal. But it's a good start but DAZN is going to run into problems with customers who are technologically illiterate.
As boxing fans we're used to finding streams. If you took NFL/NBA/NHL/MLB off TV and their fans had to find a stream they'd go crazy. Cable/Satellite companies still make a killing selling sports packages so fan can watch different games.
For those of you not in America: I'm from Detroit but live in Cincinnati. If I wanted to watch the Detroit Lions play on Sunday I'd have to buy an NFL subscription package from the satellite company because they only show the local and regional games on TV. Unless it's a nationally televised game. And that's rare. So my point is most sports fans don't use apps to watch games that aren't local or regional. They buy the subscription from the cable/satellite provider
But us boxing fans, we know how to find any fight we want to see. We're far ahead of the curve than other sports fans. DAZN will have to educate fans about the app. If you tell a casual boxing fan to download the app on their phone the response you're going to get is "I'm not watching boxing on my phone". This sounds foreign to us because we're used to finding a stream on a phone or computer and mirroring it to our TV. But the average sports fan doesn't have to do that. That is a HUGE barrier DAZN will have to overcome. They have to find a way to educate the average fan on how to mirror from their phone to their TV. Unless they have a firestick/roku. If I were them I'd push the firestick/roku because it's the easiest way to go.
Another thing is we're (Americans) lazy. We want it now and we want it at a push of the button. We don't feel we should have to buy 3rd party devices to facilitate an app we're paying for. Trust me on this one. I installed residential cable for 10 years. Customers felt they shouldn't have to buy an HDMI splitter to hook up the cable box even though their devices are taking up all the HDMI ports on their TV.
So from my point of view and being in the field for over 10 years:
1.Customers are ****** when it comes to technology.
2. Customers are ****** when it comes to technology.
Until DAZN comes pre-installed on smart TV's they'll be fighting an never ending battle to educate ****** customers.
You make a great point. One is gonna have to have at least a Wi-Fi internet connection in order to watch these fights on DAZN. It could be a problem for those who are not computer literate for example as in having to install the internet on your TV if it's not a Smart TV with internet access.
I was on the fence about getting DAZN, they have a very good schedule and a lot of fights.(I check ESPN for the Boxing schedule) Now that they have Canelo I'll be getting the free trail for the Andrade fight on Satruday, then I'm keeping it for Canelo and future fights.
I'll probably be getting ESPN+ and SHO anytime also, $30 a month is nothing for having most the best fights on HD streaming.
I don't see DAZN having enough great fights that US fans will feel they want to bleed another $10 a month for it.
They are gonna need to prove PPV is a dated concept sooner rather than later. Thats the hill they gotta climb to have success with casuals boxing fans.
So far neither of these new streaming platforms have proven it can kill PPV. Bob has put on a couple low level PPV type fights. But DAZN hasn't done one yet. And neither have gotten close to putting on a big PPV type fight on their platform.
Til these streaming platforms are putting the biggest fights on these platforms they haven't really showed us the boxing landscape has changed THAT much.

I think the logic is that PPV should be dying, but when we're not far removed from the incredible May/Pac event, and just recently the UFC pulling a 2mill buy, it seems ppv is still alive and well.
Kinda reminds me of VR, Google Glass, and other such "steps forward" that the consumers just didn't want.
That's the problem with DAZN, boxing fans weren't asking for another subscription service.

DAZN is way better than ESPN plus. It's worth the money, trust me

PPV isn't going anywhere. A ten dollar a month service can't facilitate a big fight. We were paying about that much for HBO and they still had PPV's. WWE has a service for about the same price and they still have PPV's and so does UFC.
It was even mentioned on PTI today. Boxing has a new King, HBO is dead long live DAZN!
You don't have to listen to me. I'm just some dude that dealt with these idiot customers for over 10 years explaining to them that when you hit the all power button on the remote control it turns all your devices off. But if you hit the tv power on the remote it only turns the tv off. So when you hit the all power button to turn it on its turning off the cable box and turning on the tv. So your cable isn't actually broke. You're remote is out of sync. Never underestimate the ******ity of people when it comes to technology.
We (boxing fans) are in a bubble. We hear boxing on an app and we know exactly what to do because we've been streaming for so long. The average sports fan is clueless.
The average sports fans isn't clueless to streaming. WTF bs is this? The average sports fan already streams Netflix. Already streams Spotify. Already streams Pandora. You don't need a device hooked up to your tv. Most people have a smart tv so you don't need a firestick.
Hell most people under 35 don't even watch tv anymore anyway and STREAM EVERYTHING. And that is the demographic they want anyway
