I hate to say it, but I think Kovalev has a weak chin. He was KOed in the amateurs, dropped by Darnell Boone, rocked and stopped by featherfisted Ward, and knocked out cold by Alvarez.
Kovalev's chin is weak.

chin in boxing refers to ability to take a punch. it doesnt mean just literally the chin part of your bodyComment

The first knockdown, seemed like it was from a punch that he could have either slipped or blocked. His stamina and reflexes appears to be declining. That punch was in clear view. He saw it but couldn't move out of the way of it which is not a good sign. His china is now permanently broken.Comment

So if a boxer gets KO'd a couple times by body shots, he still has a weak chin? Did Oscar have a weak chin because Hopkins KO'd him with a body shot?
I think it's reasonable to differentiate between a guy that can take a punch to every part of his body...EXCEPT his chin. Amir Khan comes to mind...his chin is absolutely weak.Comment

His chin is not bad at all. It was a very heavy right hand that landed perfectly. It's boxing, it happens. Pretty much anyone would get dropped from that shot. Kovalev got back up after that first knockdown, and I don't think he was out of it at that point. His mistake, in my opinion, was not going into the clinch or backup into survival mode to wait out the round, get the break, and recompose himself. Instead he got back up, started fighting and trading with Alvarez again while still wobbly, and that second knockdown is what really finished him.
Had he played it safe after that first knockdown and waited out the round, the outcome could have been completely different.
But this is boxing, he fought on until the end, and the haters calling him a quitter look like total morons.
He is 35, on the decline, but I do think he can still perform very well in the rematch if he decides to exercise his clause, and might have a few fights left in him, if he remains mentally in the sport.Comment
