That's good. Who want effing rematches? We don't have nine lives.
This sport needs variety. We've seen the fight. What more do you want?
Mares is done, anyway. He's become boring to watch.
All that running and clinching and preservation.
Gonzalez made him a boring fighter.Comment

Wasn't really up for the rematch. Next should be LSC vs Valdez and Mares vs a Diaz or someone like that.Comment

Delayed but not denied
Showtime is committed to airing the rematch whenever it happens, but the in-between fight now needs to be negotiated.
LSC and Mares, in separate fights on the same bill, is likely more than big enough for a PBC on FOX card. Santa Cruz will likely have to give up some money to make the numbers work (and I doubt that they'd burn out Staples Center with the split fights), but this interim show would be what he wanted to do anyway.
Find a soft spot in the college football schedule (October has two weeks without any real marquee matchups) or wait until December (early bowl season; look for a Saturday date where the Lakers and Clippers are both not in LA).Comment

It's that lazy eye bro, not even any BS in this but my mom who hates boxing instantly knows the name Abner, because she noticed that eye so bad once on like a PBC or something that Mares was commentating.
, I really fear he could end up like Israel Vazquez.
I actually want to see the rematch, but this is just Leo wanting a payday before his payday, smh.Comment

therenisnt enough money for the fight on showtime and since fox doesn't pay for fights no way it goes there. Pbc doesn't have that type of budget anymore. They show low cost fights like Figueroa vs guerrero now. Not mares vs leo.Showtime is committed to airing the rematch whenever it happens, but the in-between fight now needs to be negotiated.

In the mean time Abner hasn't fought for 10 months since his career redefining win over Cuéllar and Santa Cruz has been out almost as long after beating Frampton.
Pbc just can't get it right. Leaving theses guys and wilder on the sideline instead of building on their momentum. No wonder the ratings are down. Fans forget about themComment

I wasn't into the rematch either, and against valdez would be a great win for valdez,i really think that fight he had with marriage, which was a hard fight helped him a lot, sometimes guys are used to easy fights and then get a tough one and lose, that fight there prepared him for someone like santa cruz who will be all over him...hope valdez wins if they ever do fightComment

It was only gonna be vacated if the fight were to happen I think. What happens to Mares belt? I thought he just vacated or was stripped of the WBA Regular belt because he was fighting Santa Cruz the WBA Super champ. WBA just sanctioned Jesus Rojas vs Claudio Marrero for the WBA title on the Canelo/GGG undercard
At the moment, the WBA also recognizes Leo Santa Cruz as the "super champion" in the featherweight division. The "regular" champion until recently was Abner Mares.
"But as Santa Cruz and Mares are going to fight for the super championship (on October 7), the regular title has already been vacated," explained Bustillo to Sanchez.
Mares just lost his belt and the fightComment
