Easy. Ali had charisma, Floyd is corny. Very corny. And annoying as hell.

It's not so much that people hate Maywether's running is that people dislike Floyd's reluctance in mixing it up by standing, exchanging and trading toe to toe with his opponents.

Floyd style is not crowd pleasing one because he is a defensive counter puncher who hardly throws any punches. Then to top it off, he often potshots with just single punches most of the time.

While the rest of the time he is either laying on the ropes; Slipping and blocking punches or just moving and clinching without throwing any combinations or flurries at all.

On the other hand, Ali ran but he threw several combinations in bunches as he moved, which often pleased the crowd. Ali was an offensive boxer/puncher where as May is just only a defensive boxer/counter puncher.

Said if before and I'll say it again: people hate Floyd because his story had no arc. Ali was 'humbled' (defeated) and had to rise again, which won some fans over and started him down the path of eventually becoming a beloved figure by fans. Same for Lewis, and any other bad boy/villain/heel persona in boxing. When someone wins nonstop in any sport, the fans react negatively because they feel that there must be some anti-competitive reason behind their constant winnings.

Floyd was never taken down a peg, and the fans are forever going to hate him for it.

That's an interesting point you raise. If Ali hadn't lost to Frazier, Spinks and Norton would he still have been as beloved as he was? I think so. TBF, it wasn't just for his fights that people loved Ali. He was always among the people and wasn't some lofty celebrity that avoided the plebs.
