It sounds like he's guessing it did "about" 170K. Either way the numbers aren't great but that's the nature of boxing today. It should have got better numbers but if everyone was expecting a massacre why bother watching?Comment

I can't speak for other countries, but in America you need a hero vs. a villain and/or good guy vs. bad guy and/or David vs. Goliath type of match up to sell a PPV. I don't care how good the fighters may or may not be, if you don't have an angle or drama outside of the ring to attract causal fans, you won't have huge sales.
Just look at the history of the sport in America and you'll see the highest grossing fights all had one of these types of angles.
Ali, FMJ, & Tyson were all considered the bad guy. The Majority of America despised these men, not for what they did in the ring but what the did and or said outside of the ring.
I really hate to bring ethnicity into this discussion, but Majority America hates a Blackman that talks a ton of trash and backs it up in the ring (Ali, FMJ). With Tyson, many of Majority America viewed him as utter trash and despised everything he did outside of the ring (good or bad).
So when you matched these guys against those that Majority America viewed as good guys, humble guys, or hero's, Majority America was all in because they felt the loud mouth or thug would get the beating they deserved.
How Promoters market these fights plays a huge part in how much revenue will be generated.
Really, just look at the history of the sport in America and the highest grossing fights.
Jack Johnson vs. any White man
Ali vs. Floyd Patterson, Joe Frazier, George Forman
FMJ vs. ODLH, Manny Pac, Canelo
Tyson vs. Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield
Hell, look at Tommy Hearns vs. SRL. SRL was the good guy and Hearns was the villain. How much money was generated for that fight.
Kovalev vs. Ward, Jacobs vs. GGG, both lacked trash talking. Not just regular trash talking, but over the top demeaning trash talking. Its so much more to selling a fight than just the fight.Last edited by HAY-B; 03-24-2017, 09:19 PM.Comment

When you are the supposed face of boxnibg and the cash cow and have the numbers cantnelo had that's nothing to brag about. This fight was bought by hard core fans not casualsComment

Yeah MY benchpress numbers, not anyone else's numbers. Which is exactly my point. Why care about what OTHER PEOPLE are making when you arent getting a single dollar of that money?

If professional boxers aren't getting paid, if PPV numbers are dropping low, if no one attends fights, if no money's coming in at all, that spells a big problem for the sport.Comment

Again, this goofy "1 GG buy = 2 Canelo buys because my hero is greater than yours" argument is something children do. If you want me to think your mind works on that level, carry on I guess...Comment

Dude your logic is flawed cantnelo is a bigger name by far and Jacobs is just a little more known than smith. Cantnelo should have done 500k the way Oscar and Floyd did. Ggg isn't the bigger draw and his fanboys can keep thinking thatComment
