This was not PPV worthy! PPV is for SUPER FIGHTS like GGG vs Canelo, along those lines.

Sigh. Ability to do basic math?
I'm not sure why even intelligent posters like yourself keep looking at PPV numbers in a vacuum. By themselves they don't mean jack ****. Canelo has high purses, and 300K PPV buys make his events unprofitable and bombs for the networks. Same reason why Pacquaio/Bradley 3 was deemed a bomb by Arum himself despite doing almost 500K buys - he lost money on it.

Golovkin still has relatively low purses for putting on these events - 2.5m in this fight. With 20K more buys than Lemieux and almost 2x the gate revenue, everybody came away content with this PPV.

The problem with Golovkin is that he lacks charisma. He needs to find a new gimmick where he can create some crossover buzz. This fake, corporate, nice guy Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao image of his is outdated.

Nowadays in order for the sport of boxing to get noticed and become mainstream again, one is going to have to become controversial. The bottom line is controversy sells as was evidenced by the careers of both Muhammad Ali and Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

These fighters became box office draws and had attained mainstream success not so much because of their in ring ability but because they were polarizing figures as well. As previously stated controversy does sell after all.

You think THAT'S why GG hardcores are attacking Canelo numbers and not GG numbers?? (which is what my post was about)
Come on Jozef, you know they aren't doing that. I'll give you credit for finding a legit angle by which to merit success, but I'm talking about these Canelo/Golovkin wars on NSB and you know these guys are just following the leader.

I'm not bashing Golovkin's numbers here. I wish he pulled big numbers on this one. To see people who attacked Canelo's numbers in here lauding Golovkin's success is pretty transparent and you know that.

I hear what you're saying but I think he's got a good angle, especially compared to Canelo, who has the personality of a lawn.
GG has the dichotomy of the unassuming guy who happens to be a killer in the ring. Many people love that. He's got the quirky accent and big smile. I don't know that he needs to do much more. The lack of depth and names in the division just made it hard to build a name for him. When Tyson was coming up, he had some names to feast on. GG hadn't had the luxury as Sergio was gone and Cotto went south.

I just don't get why they avoid the fight at all costs. Right now it's a 50/50 fight action packed. As a huge ggg fan I think $7mil and 20% of ppv is fair. Right???

his old gimmick, based on marketing/hype, has now run it's course

Golovkin should have fought Mora in 2013, Lara/Cotto in 2014, Jacobs/Saunders in 2015, and they should not have mentioned 168 until they were ready to move up, whyich should have happened in 2016

and I don't think my expectations are too high, because that is exactly what they promised

Golovkin is struggling to gain popularity because they have not reached the heights they promised

Canelo is popular because he took those fights

Just like every other business, boxing changes. Why would a person who can barely afford his rent pay $65, when he can watch it on Periscope? I make good money honest, and I still cant justify paying $65 for something that is free on periscope..... If boxing was my business, I would accept that PPV is not a money maker like it once was and look for a new profit stream. IF PPV dies, I think it actually would benefit boxing and the unintended consequence would be that boxing would be more mainstream> and a smart entrepreneur can figure out how to make money on that. Arum is old in his ways and Oscar is just following an old blueprint. I respect al Haymon for trying to get away from the PPV and going with PBC.

To put it in perspective for the cheap so-called boxing fans I could have easily been evicted from my apt just because I spent money i didnt have to get this fight. Spent every last penny i had.
