I think this was a rare case of a "50/50" fight.
GGG is more internationally known, and recognized boxer; but the UK is really a lot different than America in how their PPV model/ticket-selling model works.
From what I've seen, local fighters have A LOT more "grassroots" supporter, if you will, from the population.
So Brook was a relatively big name because UK is a smaller county, so in proportion to the population, say, if he were an American fighter, he's a lot more popular, and can draw more people to a show (to a comparable USA fighter of his popularity level).
I'm having trouble to word this the best way possible this early in the morning, but essentially GGG was the bigger overall name, BUT, because he was fighting Brook in the UK, where boxers get A LOT more "local/home-town/country/grass-roots support" than a comparable fighter in the USA, they were both equally responsible for the number of eyeballs on TV sets, and asses in seats.
So this fight made a lot more money in the UK< than say, a Keith Thurman or Danny Garcia would make fighting GGG in USA because the UK population really tends to tune in more, and rally behind a hometown boxer.
That's why I've seen in cases where a boxer with only like 10 fights, fighting out of say, a Liverpool, or Nottingham, can still easily do a 5k+ crowd, because a lot more people wanna come out and see the local kid fight... It's really a great example of "GRASS-ROOTS" boxing...
I think a lot of this has to do with the local fighters being attached to the popular football teams in the area (Bellew to Everton; Hatton to Man City...)Last edited by Cheek busting; 12-01-2016, 03:32 AM.Comment

Both guys played a part in the success of that PPV, so I guess you can't say one guy is solely responsible for the numbers.
The key thing is this though, without Brook there would be no PPV but a PPV was possible without Golovkin had the Vargas fight not fallen apart.
Because of that it doesn't make sense for Golovkin fans to use those numbers as bragging rights for Golovkin... the same way it doesn't make sense for a Canelo fan to use the 2.2 million against Mayweather for his bragging rights.Comment

If Ward was British and he'd got that win over Kovalev here in the UK, with 3 Brit judges and a Brit referee, this place would be going nuts with people screaming about "UK home cooking" .... Fact.Comment

BARB, the Broadcasters Audience Research Board, is the most reliable source you can find for UK TV audience numbers ... unless it posts figures you don't agree with. Lol.Last edited by kafkod; 12-01-2016, 07:35 AM.Comment
