Comments Thread For: Malignaggi: Andre Ward is The P4P Best, Could Lose To Kovalev

Too bad for Maidana, that he tried to bring those light blue gloves that were NOT approved in the first place. Maybe all that could've been avoided! In the end, talent wins, not gloves.Comment

Wrong again. You are truly an idiot.Ward is indeed quite talented, as he should be. Same trainer I believe since he was a kid basically, has had stacks of fights to work pretty much every conceivable angle out with his game. He just has 2 problems... inactivity, AND Kovalev. Ward has always been able to rely on his superior boxing ability to win fights against tough odds. Well, now he's a bit rusty, timing off, and he's up against someone at or nearly at his level of boxing... AND the most power he's ever faced. This is indeed a 50-50 fight. Ironically, it will sell the bulk of tickets and PPVs because of Kovalev, not Ward. Still, a great fight.Comment

Its not easier to be a defensive fighter than it is to be an offensive fighter. If that were the case, there would be more defensive, "safety first" fighters out there. People diminish defensive fighters almost acting as if being defensive guarantees victory. It doesn't. There's plenty defensive fighters in the history of the sport that weren't very good. If you had to merely be defensive to guarantee wins, everybody would be doing it. And the notion that guys are offensive because its crowd pleasing is nonsense as well. Most fight the way they fight becausr they don't have the skills, reflexes, and quickness to be defensive. Adrien Broner is a prime example. Just because you tuck your chin behind your shoulder and rolll doesn't make you Floyd Mayweather. No hate from me on this subject. Don't get me wrong, I'm rooting for Kovalev as I'm a sucker for the crowd-pleasing knockout but Ward deserves all the respect in the world for taking the fight and he wouldn't do so if he didn't think he could win.
I'll always root for the puncher over a spoiler and it's marginally easier to be a defensive fighter than offensive but it doesn't belittle the skill or achievement.
Sometimes a win is the only goal.Comment

punch resistance has nothing to do with skin toughness. Ward is a light skinned guy and they mark up easier than darker people, thats common sense. When he did get caught with a solid shot, he didnt stumble, get buzzed or anything.I agree with you. Barrera's power shots were insanely slow. He looked like he was going in slow motion, and he threw a lot of extremely wide hooks.
But he still got marked up. I gave the Froch example to show visually what I meant. Either Ward's punch resistance is not what it used to be, or the 175s punch that much harder.. in either case, Ward took some damage which he did not against Kessler or Froch, two guys that are MUCH better than Barrera.
That's the criteria I used to say that his defense wasn't the same as it used to be. You can disagree, that is fine.
I don't want to go into a huge Golovkin vs Ward pissfest. There's too many of those already. Use the same criteria for Golovkin as I did for Ward. Resume and skill displayed.
Resume - Ward beat 2 elite guys 4-5 years ago and has no notable wins in the last 3 years. Golovkin has no elite wins but has beaten several legit top10 contenders.
Skill Displayed - Golovkin has looked more impressive than Ward. He barely ever loses a round and finishes his opponents.
If we assume that Wade and Barrera are about on the same level (personally I think Barrera was slightly better), we can judge their performance. Ward won a wide decision, losing 1 round on the cards. Golovkin easily stopped Wade in the 2nd.
That's fine, but that was 4 years ago. If this was 2012 or 2013, I'd agree with you. But it's not. Until Ward shows that he's still the same fighter he was 5 years ago, I'm not putting him anywhere near P4P #1.
Hell, Ward himself said that he would grade his performance a B-. If he can show in his next fight that he can still fight at the "A" level, I have no problems putting him in Top3 P4P.
if you hadnt lost since your peach fuzz started coming in, you'd have high expectations for yourself. What great fighter ever gives themselves an A anyway? lets be serious. A perfectionist, like Ward, will break down everything in detail
its not hard to look impressive when you dont fight elite competition. We all know Ward has finally started fighting more so trying to dumb it down to the last 3 years knowing he only fought a few times is kinda ******. come on man.
styles make fights. A win is a win when it is dominant. Kayoing a no name is not no more impressive than outboxing one. Wade didnt belong in the ring with GGG, Barrera was a better opponent for ward because he was a true light heavyweight and more dangerous opponent.Comment
