But they had no power so they broke rules, created phony belts and let them fight who they wanted to in the meantime because if they didn't both guys would of vacated their belts. Hopkins had a middleweight title fight with Oscar at a catchweight. Sergio had a middleweight title fight with Cotto at a catchweight. Canelo had a Jr Middleweight title fight with Floyd at a catchweight. Cotto had a welterweight title fight with Manny at a catchweight. All titles fights contracted below the weight limit. Canelo is doing nothing new and just a few years ago he was on the other end of this. Canelo has NEVER said he is ready to fight at 160 and can vacate the belt and continue fighting Jr Middleweights and his fans will still support him. GGG is the idiot who already said he is willing to fight at 154 and can make that weight easily. Well if he wants that fight that is what he has to do.

Boxing should not be allowing playing games with Catch weight fights for titles. If a fighter has a belt at a given weight then fight at that given weight or lighter but defend it at the assigned weight. Boxing should not be comprising it's championship weights for anyone. Ward brought the respect, resume, name, prestige, and anything else you want to think of when it comes to elite v elite fighters fighting. IDC if they fought in a dennys parking lot for free grand slams with only 1 person there. This was his ticket and he and his team fumbled it away. Now at 34 he is stuck accepting step aside after step aside and fighting the same level of comp.

Big fights for him are at 168 but hes wasting his time in the MW wasteland

Wards last fight did like 300k on FREE tv, and they had to paper 75% of the tickets just to make it look decent on tv. 98% of casual boxing fans couldnt pick Ward out of a lineup.
