I think most people never got to see the best Calzaghe and that was his own fault or his teams fault. By the time he was getting major recognition, he was already in his mid 30's and his hands were shot. When he was in his 20's, he had real power and was known as a big puncher. Even Eubank said that first shot Calzaghe put him down with was the hardest he'd been hit. But he damaged his hands a lot and become the "slapper" everyone knows.
I think head to head he beats any SMW, Ward included. He was just a winner who could adapt and find a way to win.
