I think most people never got to see the best Calzaghe and that was his own fault or his teams fault. By the time he was getting major recognition, he was already in his mid 30's and his hands were shot. When he was in his 20's, he had real power and was known as a big puncher. Even Eubank said that first shot Calzaghe put him down with was the hardest he'd been hit. But he damaged his hands a lot and become the "slapper" everyone knows.

I think head to head he beats any SMW, Ward included. He was just a winner who could adapt and find a way to win.

I just wish he dared to be great earlier in his career because i think he would have been a real superstar of boxing.

I agree w/ much of that. People tend to watch one or two high profile fights and don't really "study" the sport. A prime Calzaghe could have gone far, circumstances permitting. Though Ward would always be the better boxer (and I put them at 50/50), Calzaghe would certainly cause him to hesitate and adjust, and possibly tire before that ever happened. Just as so many others did, as would Kovalev, Stevenson, etc. Fans have no idea just how significant volume and stamina are. They are everything and no matter how slick or powerful you might be, stamina and volume are as relentless and cruel as father time.

Trying to imagine it but I just can't wrap my head around it. Like so many others, GGG would look solid for two rounds and then become exhausted as he would throw, only to have the elusive Calzaghe dodge, and reply with a few shots. Calzaghe's ability to predict punches was incredibly strong and, if we're honest, Golovkin offers no surprises. It's not part of his game. I've never seen Calzaghe back down, even after being dropped. Without the fear factor, how does Golov deal with a guy cutting quick angles, who is highly unorthodox and no one has adjusted to, a guy who forces a clinch, roughs him up, and hammers him on the way out (not unlike Ward). I think Calzaghe ****s GGG, no lube, no apologies.

Ward by UD. I have a hard time believing a fighter that barely beat an old Hopkins can school someone like Ward. Hopkins landed the cleaner shots and got the better of Calzaghe on the inside, I'm sure Ward could be even more successful.

Ward is an exceptional fighter, unfortunately he isn't very popular so I'm not surprised by the poll results.
