A PPV fight against Canelo would bring Golovkin his highest payday. He can't get more money against anyone else. And if he beats Canelo he increases his name value tremendously, that would put him firmly on the path to being the next PPV star.

I find it hard to believe that he would turn down all those benefits just because of the 155 lb weight.

He said he'd drop to 154 for Mayweather, which was the biggest payday in all of boxing. Why not drop down for the second biggest?

I already think GGG is past the apex of his prime. But it might be a slow tailing off as nobody has put a beating on him yet - not even been down and he obviously looks after himself.
I think Canelo could gain a false level of confidence if he takes Cotto out early - so that scenario would diminish interest in a rematch and favor Canelo (and DLH) stepping up.

As GGG has yet to take one beating let alone multiple, I highly doubt that he is past his prime, and as long as he continues to eat right and train properly, and as long as his desire still burns brightly (finally getting to fight Canelo ought to provide the fuel necessary), I believe that he can continue at his present level or perhaps even higher. As the boxing world knows, Wlad and Hopkins are current proof that hitting age 33 isn't a guarantee of diminished capacity.

I would assume that the idea of a fight with Ward went nowhere because Ward was asking too much - as if he held the reins and hadn't quit fighting for 19 months after having fought only four times in the previous four years.

They never entertained a fight with Ward. Which they shouldn't of. If I was handling GGG I wouldn't let him no where near Ward.
