Lemeiux was a nobody. He didn't improve since the Rubio and Alcine losses. The only thing that improved was his teams matchmaking. Lemeiux was offered Stevens and he didn't want that work. His team steered him away from punchers after the Rubio/Alcine losses. He'd only fought 2 guys with a KO percentage above 50% since those losses.Even if he dropped down to 155lbs and beat Canelo, how much credit would he really get? If Hopkins beat Trinidad right after Tito beat Vargas (before Reid & Joppy), Hopkins wouldn't have received near as much credit.
That was the problem with taking the Lemieux fight now, everybody just wrote Lemieux off like he was a nobody. But if Lemeiux had been allowed to go on HBO and destroy a couple more decent MW's like Tureano Johnson & Curtis Stevens, then Lemieux would've been seen as atleast a little more legit of a threat. Same deal with Alvarez, let him show he can beat down 160lbers like Heiland, Chudinov, or Saunders - then match him with Golovkin.Comment

Lemeiux, Saunders/Lee makes him elite? That shows how terrible his weight division his. He's 33 years old for christs sake and his best win in Murray. This is a division where the lineal champ is a SWW fighting another SWW for the MW title. If the top 5 SWW jumped to MW they'd all be ranked in the top 10 immediately. He missed his opportunity to be great against Ward. Now Ward has moved up and isn't coming back down. So who is he gonna fight to prove his greatness? Wait Canelo out? He's 33, it's now or never. So he picks up a vacated title, beats Johnson in a mado. Beats Lee/Saunders. And then what?"Great" is subjective. Being a unified champion is not a shabby achievement - even if there are no elites on the resume. Nobody questions Olympic Gold medals as achievements - although some came against better comp than others.
The way you are talking about "great" comes across as ATG - and to achieve that you need a slice of luck in having other great fighters around at your time. If GGG goes up and fights Ward that is only one fight - it still wouldn't make him an ATG in most eyes although it would seal his status as elite.Comment

Would the Great Chevez Duck GGG
Would any of the Hispanic greats Duck GGG?
Trinidad, Duran, Chevez, all great Hispanic fighters.
Would any of the great at all duck GGG?
Hagler, Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard, I can't see any of them ducking GGG because they wanted to claim a 155 self imposed weight division.
Either Canelo wants to step up, or he wants to look like a diva scared little red headed brat.Comment
