Comments Thread For: Golovkin's Promoter Reacts To Canelo's 155 Demand

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez recently caused a bit of a stir by stating that if he's victorious against Miguel Cotto on November 21st for the WBC middleweight title - he'd only consider facing Gennady Golovkin at a catch-weight of 155-pounds (which happens to be the contracted weight for the Cotto-Alvarez fight).

If the goal is mass appeal then GGG is going to have to fight at 155. I don't see how GGG fighting some scrub for the vacant title helps him at all. In order to get the big money fight he's been yearning for he has to bow down to the Canelo/Cotto winner.

Exactly. Especially after the poor PPV showing.

Canelo's days at 155lbs are coming to an end, he already tried to get Cotto to fight him at 156lbs for this fight. He's a big dude, by the end of 2016 that weight cut will be too difficult for him.

Golovkin can have his big homecoming fight in Kazakhstan vs Tureano Johnson in the new arena, then go fight Andy Lee in London in front of another 20k people on SKY ppv. He doesn't need to fight Canelo right away and can wait for Canelo to have to move up. I'd rather see Canelo establish himself at 160lbs first anyway so that their fight is bigger and Golovkin receives more credit for beating him. After Tito KO'd Reid & Joppy, people were convinced he'd beat Bernard. Alvarez could use a couple of wins like that.

i think k2 have enough leverage to negotiate an extra 2 or 3 lbs, and i think the fight can be made at 157 or above. of course both sides will play hardball in these preliminary media negotiations, but compromises will surely be made when it comes down to it

fighting for a title at a catchweight 1 lb above the limit of the lower division is ridiculous; surely even the mexican fans don't want that. split the difference, like hopkins-de la hoya and whitaker-chavez

yeah, canelo will inevitably have to fight golovkin anyway, even if he loses to cotto. he's getting bigger and bigger and golovkin is rapidly sweeping up all of the titles. he's virtually cornered

p.s. as much as i'd love to see golovkin here in the uk, i would think the andy lee fight would take place in nyc

Golovkin holds all the cards....we all know that the title is gonna be sorted after the cotto fight ....who ever wins if they don't fight there mandatory they lose there title and get stripped then golovkin will have the belt....this hurts canelo and cotto more because they will have to drop down to another division and carry on don there......there's a famous quote by Roberto Duran ( the life of a boxer is to fight for world titles.)..now let's just assume that thee was no cotto or canelo around for triple GGG. ) what would he do ? He would do exactly what he is doing now.....when you hold all the belts you hold all the strings and for me I would rather have 2 or 3 million pound a fight and do it the right way than force myself down to weight that could make me be lose.....sooner or later canelo will really have no choice but to face him especially if he really can't make the weight.....every boxer when they start the road to professional career wants to be champion of the world...why should it be different for golovkin.....it's not because of him he is not getting ATGs in the ring....I think by the end of next year the fight will be fixed if canelo makes it through cotto

until this point i have supported alvarez, but i have to admit i will find it pretty funny if he misses weight or even loses to cotto on account of being weight drained

Canelo is too big even for his new weight class of 155lbs, the guy is clearly a very big man and unlike Chavez Jr I'll give Canelo all the props he trains like an animal he isn't bloating up getting fat he is just a very big man.
