because had he committed to Lemieux and then Ward, here's what would have happened:

After Saturdays fight, the winner (canelo) would immediately claim they are interested in doing the mando, but GGG is "unavailable", as he is committed to the Ward fight. They would be 100% correct, and very smart in doing so, regardless of whether or not they had any real intention of fighting GGG. The WBC would have no choice but to strip GGG of the interim title, as he was unable to participate in the mandatory challenge, as he was contracturally obligated to Ward.

Also, with the Ward fight likely taking place in spring / summer 2016, GGG would not have enough time to do the IBF mando with Tureano Johnson, and would be stripped. The IBF only allows mandatory defenses to be delayed for unification bouts, and the Ward fight obviously would not have been a unification.

Therefore, had he accpted the Ward deal, he would have lost the WBC interim title, his mandatory status to cotto-canelo winner, and the IBF title.


But all the GGG hate squad can say is "but but but abel said doe".

if he wants to keep his IBF title, he has to do his mando. Thats what champs do, they fight their mandos. They dont try and find any excuse to get out of it.

He could also get an exemption for a bigger and more lucrative fight. Johnson probably would have took 500 bucks in step aside money cause hes a hopeless, no name can.

And Johnson is blah but its a mando so it is what it is. Lee is a decent scrap. Ward would be ok if there was ZERO chance of actually getting a unification done. Unification should take precedence. Ward will still be there a year or 2 down the road

trick question, because it completely ignores the canelo situation. IF there was NO possibility of a 160 unification ultimately happening, then GGG is probably wasting time at 160 and might as well move up for Ward, or whoever else.

However, if doing Johnson and Lee in 2016 was part of a Canelo unification process, then I'd be ok with it.
