How many times does your favorite team play on TV, looking specifically at the league wide deals (TNT/ESPN/ABC)?

If you're a fan of the Minnesota Timberwolves, your team MAYBE plays a handful of games on TNT/ESPN/ABC during the regular season.

How is boxing any different?

I'm a Montreal Canadiens fan and each and every game they play in a season, regular and playoffs, home and away, is televised in Montreal. That is a minimum of 82 games. If I was a baseball fan, and Montreal still had a team, I would watch every game available to me. I am a Montreal Alouettes fan and have season tickets but every game in the season is broadcast on TSN.

Boxing? GGG is my favorite fighter and I watch however many fights he has on HBO per year, usually 4. If I was a Cotto fan, I would be a sad camper and only watch him once per year.

Because with golf, you can follow your favorite golfer in each tournament. Usually keeping up with your fave throughout the entire week. Same thing in Tennis. Auto racing the same thing, you will follow your favorite driver or team each weekend through qualifying and race day. Now, once again, how often does someone's favorite boxer fight in a year? When he has a fight, what exposure does he get other than the fight itself? Can you follow him over his months of training and sparring sessions? Would you even want to?

This is why boxing will never compete with other sports. Fans can never build the intense connection that they can build with their favorite hockey team or baseball team or football team or soccer team or race team. Boxing does not attract the same kind of involvement. Wear a PBC t-shirt on vacation in Europe or Asia and no one will have a clue. Wear a Yankees jersey or a Canadiens sweater and every one will recognize it. Wear a Ferrari team cap and everyone will recognize it. Wear a sweatshirt with 'BRONER' across it and in some countries you will probably be arrested for indecency because they think it says BONER.

I fail to see why some people have so much trouble understanding the limitations inherent in the sport of boxing. It baffles me.

If the number gets beyond a handful of times, I'd be shocked.

Keith Thurman, if everything goes well, will fight four times per year (with that number falling to build up massive individual fights, or as he gets older).

Obviously a fire sale is a bit different, but I was talking under normal circumstances not a forced liquidation.

If the numbers continue to improve that asset price will go up, but they could also deteriorate causing that value to plummet.

The value can definitely fluctuate, but depending on the timeframe (making the amount of money you noted), the business isn't all that far away from paying off the debt, with the increase/decrease in value basically being on "house money".

The beauty of being in business, paying off debt, and continuing to bring in cashflow.

THE FIA has just released the latest viewing figures for Grand Prix racing, revealing that 40.99 billion people saw something about Formula 1 on a television set in the course of 1996. The figures obviously count people several times over as the population of the world is currently only 5.75 billion.
The coverage reached a total of 202 countries - more countries than are members of the United Nations - and involved 52,588 programs. According to FIA President Max Mosley F1 is now "firmly established as the number one televised sport in the world", exceeding the soccer World Cup and the Olympic Games.

In addition this year will see the launch of widespread digital TV, which will allow viewers to choose the pictures they watch from a selection of five channels. In order to achieve this Bernie Ecclestone's Formula One Communications company is transporting 200 tons of equipment to each race (enough to fill two entire Boeing 747 jets) and employing 200 crew members.
"Digital TV will revolutionize the broadcasting of Grand Prix events," Ecclestone says, "It will mean a whole host of exciting new images and features and it will include highly detailed information which will allow the viewer to follow the race with information normally only available to the team manager."

As a measure of the expansion in TV viewing of Formula 1, 10 years ago the sport was claiming only 13 billion viewers. This climbed steeply in the 1990s reaching 30bn by 1992 and leaping to 45bn in 1994. This was largely due to the news coverage surrounding the death of Ayrton Senna at Imola and the figures have since slid back to 40bn.

Although the FIA does not give details of individual races the average live TV audience for a Grand Prix around 650m, but can peak at over a billion spectators - which is a pretty impressive statistic...

Airing every Montreal Canadiens game in Montreal is kind of a 'no duh' situation; for the Minnesota Timberwolves, I'm pretty sure that some local affiliate show all of the Timberwolves games as well.

The national TV contract is different from the local contract that you seem to want to highlight.

I follow Formula 1 and watch every race. There are 19 this year. My favorite driver is Lewis Hamilton and I have been following his career for a number of years now and have probably seen him in over 150 races on television.

If you want to talk tennis, I do not know how many tournaments a particular player will play in a particular year as it varies due to injury and what tournaments they choose to play in, but in a Grand Slam tourney like the French Open or Wimbledon, a top player may play 4 or 5 matches during the week of the tournament and all will be televised. There are 4 GS tournaments so if you are a fan of Serena Williams, for example, you may see her play over 16 times just at those tournaments. There are other tournaments during the year, such as here in Montreal, that are not GS tournaments but are still televised which boosts that number dramatically. You can easily watch a favourite tennis player over 20 times in a season.

I can't tell you anything about golf as I do not consider it to be a sport and do not follow it or play it.

If I choose to subscribe to the NHL Center Ice package from my cable provider, I can watch every game of every team in the league. If I subscribe to the MLB package, I can watch every game of every team in the league for the entire season. Either package will cost me less for the season than one boxing PPV.

The Canadiens are shown on Hockey Night in Canada in Eastern Canada on the CBC network, the Leafs are shown in Ontario and central Canada and Calgary and Vancouver in their respective markets. This will all change next year with the new deal the NHL signed with Rogers, but it has been this way since the first day hockey was aired on Canadian television.
