Something about trust-busting laws never sat well with me. I get their purpose but something just seems wrong with the courts stepping in and saying "Hey, your company is getting too big of a market share. We're going to force you to downsize to avoid a monopoly".
They've done that with airlines a couple of different times. They nearly did it with US Airways and American Airlines. They blocked AT&T acquiring T-Mobile, Comcast from buying Time-Warner Cable, etc. I get why, it's to protect the market but government interfering in the market at all just feels off.Comment

There is a huge difference for me between buying companies & acquiring customers via better service. If a boxing company was going around buying up all the promotional companies or something like that than I could see some monopoly type stuff going on.Something about trust-busting laws never sat well with me. Haymon Boxing is providing a seemingly better service by paying guys more, apparently treating them better (as I've yet to hear any of the 150+ boxers complain like they do about alphabet groups & promoters all the time), not keeping them locked into contracts if their unhappy & giving them more worthwhile opportunities to increase their brand AND still working within the normal constraints of the business of boxing just doing things in a similar fashion to the industry leader, HBO. I understand all the butthurtness for those who could end up being left behind, but anyone could legally be doing exactly what HBO & Haymon boxing have done if they had access to the money needed & were willing to take the risk of losing that money.Comment

the fans are the customers. the boxers are employees. it's nice that the boxers are being well paid and all but it's irrelevant to your point about providing a service.Haymon Boxing is providing a seemingly better service by paying guys more, apparently treating them better (as I've yet to hear any of the 150+ boxers complain like they do about alphabet groups & promoters all the time), not keeping them locked into contracts if their unhappy & giving them more worthwhile opportunities to increase their brand AND still working within the normal constraints of the business of boxing just doing things in a similar fashion to the industry leader, HBO.Comment

The Ali Act, from what I've been able to figure about the law, was intended to prevent a person from collecting two checks from a fighter; Don King, was known to take manager fees from both fighters, and then collect his take as promoter on top.
Haymon is collecting one check. As was the case in Chavez example, Haymon's company acted as a pass-through to Chavez's company, with Chavez taking the near full fee Haymon received, sans Haymon's own cut.
The lawyer example is inaccurate; a clearer example would be if you hired Barcham, Barcham, Barcham LLP (law firm) to represent you suing the company, the company suing you paid the settlement to Barcham, Barcham, Barcham LLP, who then cut a check to you , less whatever fee they charged you for their work.
Barcham, Barcham, Barcham LLP, though multiple transactions were undertaken, only netted one payment on your case.
Not entirely. The Ali Act also attempts to address the conflict of interest created by a manager acting as (or profiting from) a promoter. The "manager" has a fiduciary duty to focus solely on the best interests of the fighter. A conflict of interest is created if he also has a stake in the success of a particular event or promotion, and he certainly cant answer to an investment group who loaned him $425 million dollars without creating even yet another conflict. The interests of the fighter and the interests of the investor are in direct conflict
The same way a "manager" cannot represent both sides of a fight. Everything negotiated for fighter A (purse, weight, gloves, venue, etc) comes at the expense of fighter B. It is impossible to give your best efforts to 2 opposing interests.
People who dont know anything like to spout off that Haymon is an "advisor", or blah blah blah. He is in fact a licensed manager, and must operate under those laws. He can call himself a belly dancer if he wants to, it doesnt change the fact that he is a managerLast edited by OnePunch; 05-01-2015, 08:36 AM.Comment

Exactly. Anyone saying Haymon is providing a better service has their head so far up Haymon's arse they can't see the truth. The only ones who benefit are Haymon fighters. They sign to him for one reason it's because he is able to secure them high fight purses for gross mismatches. He will protect them from having to fight better competition and they can minimize the threat of losing based on those mismatches. That's great for the fighters big pay days for easy fights but unless you are a fighter this is terrible for boxing fans. As a boxing fan I could care less that Broner makes 1.5 mil for the joke fight with Molina.
PBC is a inferior product with mismatches. Haymon is not boxing's savior. He could careless about boxing and is just trying to milk money out of boxing. He's a crook. Which if he was just that I wouldn't mind. But he's a crook who puts a stop gap to the fights boxing fans want to see. If you are a haymon fighter you can't fight Canelo, Kovelev, Cotto, Crawford, Ward, Mattyhsee, ect. So you are stuck with Haymon fighers exclusively fighting in house which wouldn't be terrible except he won't put his best fighters against each other either. So you get every promoter accusing Haymon of killing the chance of any fights with them and Haymon being accused of mismatches in his own stable. How the Hell is this good for Boxing? But let's all celebrate this shady crook because Broner gets to keep making 1mil plus for fighting tomato cans. Boxing fans are already hip to Haymon's BS which is why PBC tv ratings are falling and they are forced to give away tickets because nobody is buying them. And now the promoters and associations are tired of it too and the lawsuit will only grow with others joining in to rid boxing of the Haymon cancer.Last edited by bigdunny1; 05-01-2015, 09:05 AM.Comment

I swear boxing fans are the dumbest sports fans on the planet. Downright cannibalistic when it comes to the sport. U know what, let everything go back to how it's been the last 10 years. Let's the frikkin sport evaporate even more til it all but dies. Honestly at thus point it will be deserved. Because seriously who gives a ****. Mayweather and Pacquiao are gone after thus year. Perfect time for something new and all we get is this the sides bull****. Sad part is these idiots think this is about fans. It's about rich ppl being fearful of what other rich people are doing. They can't compete in the marketplace so they have to fight the battle in the courts. Has nothing to do with fans. But whatever. Haymon is a crook and now Oscar, Arum, the ABC are scions of good. Let's continue this slow plunge into who gives a **** that is boxing. I don't even care to write about this **** anymore, u mother****ers are too dumb to even understand the plot.Comment

It would take a Black Man to virtually take over the executive fight game to get u racist screaming from the rooftops . Phony racist crusaders , always PRETENDING as if your cause is to protect the helpless boxers money from the big bad wolf Haymon . U didnt give a dam about a boxers money when Arum was stealing it all. Now Haymon has carved out a generous market share for himself and u racist are up in arms . Reading ur pretentious , race-hating , jealous post is precisely the reason why I was told by a wise man long ago to ; BEWARE OF A WHITE MAN ON A MORAL CRUSADE !Comment

I'm giving up on trying to explain things to these fools. For whatever reasons they may have, they simply refuse to understand the very simple concepts being explained to them. They will support Haymon to the end, no matter what he does. I will continue to follow the cases and see how they turn out but there is no point in trying to explain things to these imbeciles. I suggest you do the same. It will only end in our own never ending frustration as we continue to try to explain what they will never understand. I guess they like being sheep and prove the old adage that there is indeed a sucker born every minute. Not entirely.
