In all sports, preparation, conditioning and game plan all need to come together to have greater odds of victory. If you really follow the sport of boxing, read the interviews and just pay attention to what's going on in general, you would understand why and how Cotto lost to Trout. During that time, Cotto was attached to Pedro Diaz, the Cuban amateur boxing coach. He had Cotto fighting in a style unorthodox to Cotto's strengths and original style throughout his career. He had some success against Floyd, but that may be due more to Floyd slipping than the Cotto/Diaz relationship. Regardless of what was shown on 24/7, Diaz and Cotto did not mesh well. Cotto was still trying to find that fire of old and Diaz was not the trainer to bring it out of him. Nor was his old strength and conditioning coach Phil (Landman? can't recall) the proper fit. Cotto was coming into fights in shape, but not conditioned to last 12 hard rounds effectively. This rocky relationship, the training camp in Big Bear, the move from high altitude to sea level weeks before the fight were all BAD instructions by Diaz. It started to seem like Diaz was just in it for the payday and not really guiding Cotto as he should be.
Fast forward to the relationship with Roach, a proven trainer with no room for bull****, and a new proven strength and conditioning coach in Gavin brought Cotto to the level he should have been performing at since he had the falling out with this uncle. Hell, this should have happened about a dozen fights into his pro career. Had Cotto got with Roach early on, he would have gotten the big Oscar payday and passing of the torch, and would have been the face of boxing today.
