Comments Thread For: Canelo Focused on 5/2 Date, With or Without Cotto

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) is mentally set on returning to action on May 2nd, Cinco De Mayo weekend - and told Mexico's HK 950 that his plans to fight on that date are not dependent on a deal being finalized for an HBO Pay-Per-View fight against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs).

Canelo stated that he "stepped aside once" in order to allow Floyd Mayweather Jr. to fight on the date. And says "he won't do it again."

LOL @ people thinking Canelo's not going to fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend.

He's still going to fight on regular HBO if the Cotto PPV falls through.

Canelo is a diva. He could have stayed with Showtime and signed an exclusive after thisnyear if Floyd really retires. One more year, instead u want to share a network who seems to be handing exclusives to every fighter in top rank.

he was exposed against trout lara and floyd as someone who cant really adapt to movers, and it will stay that way the rest of his career.

That's not an encouraging headline for Canelo. If he isn't fighting Cotto, Pacquiao, or Golovkin on that date, he'll be on regular HBO that night for the sole purpose of driving away PPV buys from Showtime. From a badass to a pawn.

I don't have a problem with Canelo, but his ego has grown exponentially for seemingly no reason. This guy hasn't earned a damn thing in boxing. He's been handed everything. Now he thinks he can keep taking things he hasn't earned. He's in for a rude awakening. If Mayweather-Pacquiao doesn't go down, I hope Mayweather-Cotto II does. So we can all laugh at that tough guy Canelo.

"I'm taking the Mexican dates because I'm Mexican". Who is this guy?

He will and if it's Cotto he will beat the hell out of Cotto. Bookmark it.

He has to fight a name on that date. If not, his PPV is going to fail.
