hopkins was 49 yrs old tho. calzache was just much quicker with his punches and defense than old hopkins. I think hed have won a close decision over kovalev as much as I hate to say

I don't put any stock in Kovalev's win over Hopkins, I don't, only thing I got out of it is that Kovalev understood that Hopkins is too old to initiate the action. This is why he never jumped on Hopkins, he used his feints, jab and would step back as soon as Hopkins tried to lead, forcing Hopkins to reset.

Calzaghe did get hit, did fight squared up but he still moved his head more than Kovalev and fought off of angles a lot better. I favor Calzaghe in this because of his chin, ability to recover and work ethics. Calzaghe, one TS is referring to, would have had far more to offer than last Saturday's Hopkins.

        Don't be ridiculous

much quicker with his defense? what defense? how is fighting square a good defense? you don't think kovalev is a good enough fighter to deal with a guy who's coming at him completely square? he positioned himself so that he could hit hopkins over hopkins shoulder but he wouldn't be able to find a position to hit a completely square guy?

and he wouldn't do the same to calzaghe? calzaghe was terrible from the outside. hopkins isn't. kovalev would just wait till calzaghe came forward and hit him which was very easy to do. calzaghe couldn't even avoid old hopkins punches so i dont see him avoiding kovalev's. kovalev on the other hand was able to avoid hopkin's advances which are very sneaky unlike calzaghe's which are not since he comes in completely square. easy ko. calzaghe is overrated. he wouldn't fight pavlik but he's beating kovalev? get real. stop overrating cowards.

Calzaghe picks him apart from mid range and forces Kovalev to reset. Conditioning is a factor here, Kovalev was winded against Hopkins who barely touched him, maybe you need to stop putting too much stock in that win?

Calzaghe would have a chance, because of his quickness and illusiveness at times...but going down the stretch with someone of kovalevs power would be a b*tch....if calzaghe would stick to a gameplan, kova will most likely play to his level and if calzaghe doesnt get knocked out i think he could win...

People might say based of of what??? Calzaghe has fought big punchers before like kessler, like lacy(people are gonna say, not like kovalev) and thats true kova has extreme power but calzaghe doesnt know how to lose and once he feels that power for the first time, he will proceed to try to outbox this guy be elelusive and use veteran tactics like clinching and hope thats enough to pull out a decision.....its not a far fetched idea..imo

I really feel it's too early in Kovalev's career to really give an accurate prediction on this one, I would only trust someone like Manny Steward if he was still around to predict this one as he had a tremendous eye for styles.

Now saying that I will tell you that A level fighters don't fold like Cleverly, etc. and there is no chance Calzaghe gets steam rolled by someone like Kovalev, a prime Roy Jones...maybe? But Kovalev...not a chance in my opinion, hit, hurt, absolutely but when you get to that level knockouts tend to dry up for a lot of these punchers. Now Kovalev is far more than that, but the first example of him stepping into proper elite level against Hopkins and already the first time he goes 12 rounds. People will elude to Hopkins defence, etc. but make no mistake, Hopkins is well past his best. I think Kovalev would have tremendous problems hitting a prime Calzaghe clean, it's a complicated fight for both guys, my prediction is Calzaghe UD. This is based on me foreseeing that Kovalev will eventually start to show his weaknesses at this higher level and in the end the old adage will be true in this fantasy match up, the guy with the speed, skills, adaptability, and brain will 9 times out of 10 win the day.

Old versions of Hopkins and RJJ who had lost their power dropped Calzaghe, his defence wasn't great, he had no power to worry Kovalev and he was small at the weight.
                      +1

Joe was an absolute sucker for right hands. Just ask Robin Reid.

Calzaghe would get knocked out with all due respect. Little question about that.
