They have been around since 1976 (their competitor HBO was launched in 1972). They were in the Boxing business in the early-mid 90s when they were paying Mike Tyson $25-$30 million per fight. And unlike Floyd, Mike was justifying those paydays no matter who he fought (1.6 mil buys to fight a tomato can like Peter McNeely, 1.2-1.4 mil to fight Frank Bruno, etc).

So let's stop pretending this is some not for profit operation Show is running to build up their new business. There's not benefit to them losing tens of millions of dollars.
Open up their 10Q and show it to us all. I want to see that line item.

It seems like Showtime is going on the right path right now. They are stacking Mayweather's undercards and building young fighters. So once again, Mayweather is there for exposure. Not profit. The profits will come from the future like Thurman, Porter, Danny Garcia, Canelo, Wilder, Quillen, Leo Santa Cruz, etc.

Reported economic impact of the Guerrero fight from last year's 2Q report from CBS:
However, in the next paragraph is language that suggests Showtime could have lost money on the fight. The report notes, "Cable Networks OIBDA for the second quarter of 2013 increased 9% to $207 million from $190 million for the same prior-year period, primarily a result of the revenue growth. The OIBDA increase was partially offset by higher sports programming costs, including the pay-per-view boxing event, as well as higher advertising and marketing costs to promote Showtime series."

OIBDA is an acronym for Operating expenses before depreciation and amortization.

          The Actual Report

Forbes Claims the Guerrero fight lost Showtime $12 million:
Mayweather***8217;s guarantee for the Guerrero fight was $32 million, tied for the biggest ever in boxing, but his additional haul from his cut of PPV revenue is expected to be minimal. The large Mayweather guarantee and significant promotional budget resulted in a loss of as much as $12 million for Showtime for the fight, according to one source.

Floyd-Maidana was more expensive and brought in less revenue. We'll just have to wait on future reports to get a feel for the monetary value I suppose.

LOL this is the most ridiculous theory ever. Really? They are not out to get profit? Hahahahaha are they a non-profit organization working for charity? You do know that HBO has about 5 Million more subscribers than Showtime right? Boxing is not going to change that.

Whats their annual boxing budget, less than 30m? Maybe they should have doubled this if they got money to waste on the fringe sport

They also had their all star commentators on all of their broadcast, you always hear Bernstein and his fighter's advice points.

You obviously do not have Showtime, and/or you are mixing up what HBO have been doing so far. I admit HBO have been looking second rate since late last year... I still watch it however, Showtime is much better in terms of interest and presentation. They also had the most compelling fights that had drama.
I'm a SHO subscriber, doe. Show me a list of all the non-PPV fights that were produced since the SHO/Mayweather collaboration started. You people are confusing PPVs from subscription-based fights.

I repeat, PPV fights are not for subscribers. Networks exist to attract subscribers, not PPV buyers. PPVs can be done by any network. Fox Sports can even do them better.

SHO subscribers don't/didn't benefit from Mayweather fights. The rarity of non PPV fights have become worse. This Espinoza guy has become too focused on producing PPV fights.

So show me a list of all the non-PPV fights that were generated out of this Mayweather colllaboration. I'll be waiting.

Showtime has floyd for the same reason HBO wanted to keep him. Exposure

Will it gain them subscribers? Hard to tell. I am sure after the deal has run its course someone will show the before and after of the subscribers Showtime has.

Someone very high up at Showtime or CBS approved of their strategy. The new Shosports CEO was not just given a blank check to do what he wants. If it works out for them, all is good. If it does not, expect cutbacks and some heads to roll.

HBO some years ago also had an aggressive strategy of paying high purses to get big names on their roster. It is now Showtimes turn.
