The "can't fight" is obviously relative , a better phrasing would be ' Golovkin is not comfortable fighting on his back foot' or if you want "doesn't seem comfortable"

Rigo is two times gold medalist, but if you ask him to lead and cut off the ring the way Golovkin does, he won't be comfortable, not at top level.

As for Chavez , I don't think he "can" fight on his backfoot either , the Vera I fight mentioned by another poster was a very close fight, that Chavez lost in the eyes of some.

In my opinion Chavez will try to smother Golovkin, push him to the ropes and work the body, if he's smart he'll try to clinch and lean on Golovkin, so that to wear GGG out with his mere weight (Wladimir style, but hopefully not as often )

It's known that in the ams you fight mostly on the backfoot - you need to score points in a short period of time (3 rounds) with no intention to land power shots, so it's mostly using your feet, fighting by keeping the distance and counter attacking. And brawlers usually get outscored big time as they have less chanes knocking out in 3 rounds and get countered many times (like Mexican ams). You don't find many aggressive counter punchers in the ams the way Golovkin is.

The point made can be said in another way: what is more comfortable in the ams - back foot or front foot ? The answer would be back foot. So your argument on Rigo is a bit irrelevant as he falls into the same category (comfortable on the back foot), as would Golovkin or any any distinguished am. Then after it's a choice - Golovkin challenged himself to try counter attacking on the front foot, which is way more difficult as you tend to open more and have more open spaces to hit. But this is his choice.

Funny thing is, Chavez can box on the backfoot (as he showed in Vera I), I'm not sure Golovkin can. Golovkin is going to get hit as he comes forward.

If Golovkin fights his typical flat-footed fight against Chavez and don't get him out of there early, then that could spell trouble for him because the longer the fight goes, JCC, Jr is only going to get stronger. The more Gennady exchanges, the more he is going to get hit and he is going to get hit often.

What Maravilla did against Chavez that was so very smart, is that he utilized his superior speed advantage? He kept the fight on the outside, while boxing and moving both his hands and feet exceptionally well in the process. He was never a stationary target; Thereby making him very hard to catch cleanly, while off offsetting JCC, Jr timing and keeping him off balanced in the process.

My biggest concern is that if GGG attempts to keep this fight in the trenches by trading punches toe to toe, then he will be fighting Julio's kind of fight; All the while running the risk of being eventually worn down by accumulation and attrition, the longer the fight goes; Given that JCC, Jr is naturally larger and stronger of the two.

I like chavez alot, but i dont see how he can beat GGG,, even at the higher weight,,

GGG just has too much firepower, and i think this will be like margs-shane,,, chavez just walking forward getting bombed on till he cant take it anymore...

Hahahaha I was thinking the same thing. Soon as Jr. feels GGG's power and begins getting outboxed rounds 1-4 he will immediately stop throwing punches and just throw hay-makers ala Martinez.

I really don't understand how anybody can like that spoiled, paper champ, cheating, druggy and weight advantage taking Jr. It blows my mind.

FINALLY either Chavez Jr gets retired or he shows he is serious about fighting.

I believe he will get beaten badly. He never did dedicate himself 100%. Time to put up or shut up!!
