stop with all this "no where does it say the ref has to do this or that" BS. a ref's job is to maintain control of the ring. if it's the fighter's responsibility to remain in control of his fists etc. then that would extend to every part of the fight in which case a ref isnt needed at all. in the event that a ref cannot maintain control, he is the one who is supposed to provide warnings and penalties. so even if it's not his job to step in between the two fighters after the bell, it's his job to dole out some sort of penalty for punching someone twice after the bell has rung. short of that, he's not supposed to be counting the other guy out. you can't count someone out if he is knocked down AFTER the bell goes. i dont care when the combo started, if the guy was on his feet when the bell rang then you can't count him out after it. you can ask doctors to check if he can continue or ask if he wants to quit but you can't count someone out. this referee did not do his job properly and it doesnt take a study of the rulebook to come to that conclusion.

Why would he hear it and the fighters wouldnt anyway? I cant believe people are actually making scenarios where its ok to punch after the bell, which is never

Years back(1988) in Atlantic City, New Jersey a similar situation happened between then WBA welter world champ Marlon Starling & undefeated challenger from Colombia Tomas Molinares where at the end of the 5th round they were exchanging punches & Molinares cracked Starling right after the bell & knocked him the *** out, the ref(Joe Cortez) said the punch was thrown before the bell & even thou it landed after the bell it's still good & granted the victory to Molinares. The New Jersey commissioner at the time Larry Hazzard studied the video a few days later & determined the punch was thrown &landed after thge bell so he declared the fight a No-Contest but the WBA kept Molinares as the champ & did not strip him of his title..Molinares never defended the title cause he did 2 non title fights against low caliber opponents & got knocked out twice & retired & Starling went on to win the WBC title.. Ironically that was the ONLY time Starling was ever KO'd but doesn't count & does not reflect on his record cause it was declared a "No-Contest"..

Okay, here are my thoughts: When the KO happened, I jumped up, concerned the ref might DQ Rances. I knew that was a possibility, because the rules state you can't hit after the bell. I'm cool with the ref's call, though, because of the circumstances. Barthelemy started his combo at the bell and landed the telling blow as the bell sounded a second time (out of three). It all happened in a split second. It may be technically illegal, but you simply cannot expect a fighter in the heat of battle to stop his fist in midair that way.
These judgement calls happen all the time in boxing. Just the other day, James Kirkland landed a truly late and unnecessary punch on Glen Tapia as Steve Smoger interceded. It might've damaged the poor kid. Kirkland probably should've been DQed for that savage cheap shot, but he wasn't...and neither are countless others. At least, in Bart's case, one can argue that it's unreasonable to expect the man to halt his actions midway.
