In both cases the warning 'protect yourself at all times' can be applied. If people are going to say the result should stand just because fighters are given that warning, they should also note that the warning applies to ALL times. Saying that fighters should be allowed to KO their opponents with illegal blows is bad enough, but trying to justify it by saying fighters are always supposed to protect themselves is absurd and leads to other ridiculous conclusions.
Mendez was obviously in trouble, but that doesn't mean his opponent should be able to keep punching him after the bell has sounded and a minute of recovery time is in order. I suspect that Barthelemy would win a rematch, but fighters have come back from very shaky early moments to win/draw fights later on...
