So then what's the difference between Mike suggesting it and the corner suggesting it? He stopped it at Mike's suggestion after all. For all Weeks knew Mike had secretly told his corner to stop the fight but he forced him to publicize it. Besides, the corner can always stop the fight by entering the ring during the fight.
The Corner Has The Right To Stop The Fight at ANYTIME!

You are correct. As mentioned already only the referee can stop the fight, I believe there's been a couple of fights in wich the corner has even trown in the towl and the referee had decided to let the fight go on.Comment

i guess technically Only the referee can stop the fight.
Although I do wonder about the wisdom of asking a possibly seriously concussed fighter to make that decision when the corner wants it stopped.
Anyone remember Kastidis fighting some british guy and was belting him and the Brits corner threw the towel in and the ref just picked it up and threw it back out.
The fight went on and the Brit had Kastidis hurt not long after , although he ended up losing.Comment

The corner can throw in the towel but the ref can decline the towel. Either the ref stops it on his volition, the doctor stops it, or he asks the fighter if he can't go on.
Only idiots in forums are of the opinion that a fighter who can't go on is a quitter. Just based on the fact that a pugilist elects to make his money with his hands giving and receiving punishment exempts him from being a coward and certainly not a quitter. A knee, a head nod, whatever... It's not cowardly to concede defeat. This isn't Madden, or monopoly... This is often times life and death.
Everyone feels so bad for Leal but if he never came out that last fateful round the same morons would be emasculating him calling him a coward and a quitter. GTFOH. Who cares if it's the fighter himself who concedes. The ref gave him a chance to decide for himself, it's a title fight after all... He should be the one who decides to go or not to go.Last edited by MikeRo1972; 10-23-2013, 09:44 AM.Comment

Some keyboard warriors are actually contradicting themselves by saying things kinda like Ruslan has a "KILLER punch" or is a "DEADLY puncher" and then wondering why Mike didn't continue.Comment

Anyone that believes mike quit will have the same opinion even if the ref didn't ask mike first and just stop the fight per the corners request. It makes no different whether the ref asked mike or not. People that believes he quit will still feel the same. As for me there's no shame at all as to what happen so I don't know why some of u is making a big deal over this?Comment

**** the rules if I'm a trainer who thinks the fight should be stopped. I'd walk into the ring to get disqualified if a ref declined my towel. If I feel my fighter is in danger the got damned fight is getting stopped one way or the other.Last edited by TheMexHurricane; 10-23-2013, 09:47 AM.Comment

Actually the REF is the one who has the final say. Watch Graham Earl v Katsidis if you need proof.Comment

the corner has the "right" to stop the fight. the ref is the guy who "stops the fight," but he can do it at the command of the corner. it's been done this way for well over a century.
referees ask that you tell a member of the commission if you want the fight stopped mid round. "throwing a towel" is a way of the corner getting the ref's attention while he is in the ring. anybody can physically throw a towel in the ring, so telling a commissioner to go into the ring is what they ask for you to do.
arthur mercante took a ton of heat for neglecting to stop the fight on the command of the corner in cotto-foreman. it was a huge mistake. foreman had no power, a busted leg, and was taking a real beating. he's basically done refereeing big time fights now. mercante asked "who threw the towel?" in between rounds, and the chief second said "i did." it was a joke.
if the ref really wants to be a jackass and not listen to the corner when they're retiring a fighter between rounds, they can just stay in the ring and get him DQ'd.
the corner can tell the ref to stop the fight at any time. weeks was wrong in not listening to the alvarado corner.Comment
