i get what u're saying but my point is that the round was already over. the ref had a chance to asked mike first so why not?? this is a championship match with mike being the champ if u forgot. i can see your point if the round was still going and the corner came up to stop it but the ref just ignores it.
The Corner Has The Right To Stop The Fight at ANYTIME!

I think it's because he complained about the first rios fight being stopped too early, ref just didn't wamt any excuse this time.Comment

I think it was obvious from his body language and him not protesting the stoppage that he was ok with it. Making him say it himself is humiliating. Now, if he was protesting loudly the stoppage and chomping at the bit to get back out there, that's one thing, but the writing was on the wall, and Weeks made Alvarado say he was quitting in front of millions, as opposed to letting his corner do the dirty work. It definitely lowered his stock.i get what u're saying but my point is that the round was already over. the ref had a chance to asked mike first so why not?? this is a championship match with mike being the champ if u forgot. i can see your point if the round was still going and the corner came up to stop it but the ref just ignores it.Comment

I wonder if he was instructed to allow a brutal slugfest in light of the attention that has been placed on Gatti v Ward? What the referee did was disgusting in my honest opinion, I can understand asking for the fighter's opinion in circumstances where the corner are trying to sabotage their fighter ( which I cannot recall happening), but in situations where one guy is taking a beating, the corner's wishes should be respected. It was unnecessary to damage Alvarado's pride by making him say 'I can't go on', it actually angers me.Comment

Mike could've been too ashamed to agree with his corner in front of his hometown crowd and gotten killed. According to a wiki source almost half of all boxing deaths since 1980 involve a Mexican fighter dying or a Mexican fighter killing another fighter. In 3 cases it involved a Mexican fighter killing another Mexican fighter. The fame is flattering and the money is fantastic but foolish cornermen and refs like Tony Weeks have to do better or else it's better that boxing be banned.

The refs get payed great money for having a tremendously fun job so they shouldn't make saving face a priority over a fighter's life. Besides it would've been on the corner and not on Tony Weeks.Comment
