Comments Thread For: Canelo: Mayweather's Not A Dirty Fighter, But ...

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has prepared himself well for Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s habit of forcefully using his elbows and forearms in fights.

Alvarez’s sparring partners strategically used their elbows and forearms to ready the unbeaten Mexican star for those types of tactics Saturday night at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where he’ll meet Mayweather in the biggest fight of his eight-year pro career (Showtime Pay-Per-View; $74.95 in HD; 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).

Using the elbow or forearm in a clinch is not considered to be dirty fighting in US boxing rings.
Unless it's done by an overseas fighter - eg Tyson Fury - to an American - Steve Cunningham, in which case it gives rise to more bleating than a field full of newborn lambs!

Everybody knows that Floyd Mayweather Jr. uses his elbows and forearms in fights. The refs also -- but they rarely warn Floyd for that.

Canelo is saying all the right things. Let's see if it makes any difference on fight night

Canelo is not saying all the "ring things". The only thing Canelo doesn't say is just how he would rush Floyd on the ropes in order to use his favorite power left hand combos -- because Canelo will find out it's difficult to use them in the center of the ring.

Floyd is also a specialist at pushing down on the head and neck, but then lets up just before the ref can say anything - and follows up immediately with the uppercut/hook. Floyd is also expert at clinching when he's in a bad spot. And, he knows how to tie an opponent up where he can't get out of his grip, none of this sissy hugging crap. Stop action, reset. They don't call him a Pro for nothin.

I hope Canelo really knows what he's in for. It ain't just elbows and forearms. I don't think studying the tapes is gonna help him with all that other stuff. He's always got a punchers chance though.

If that's all you think this kid can do you clearly haven't been paying attention. Trout's chin learned the hard way about meeting this kid in the center of the ring.

Canelo swings wide too often -- he needs to be extremely "economical" in his boxing approach and also very patient (becoming annoyed or anxious by/because of Floyd's style will lead him nowhere)...

Yup same thing Nard and Ward does that's why they're hard to hit and get consecutive punches off on them. Floyd don't get enough credit for his grittiness. Boxing is not just about throwing 1 2s faints and hooks. You gotta have some tricks as well like spinning and turning fighters, punching off the break on the blindside of the ref etc. Anselmo Mereno is as skilful as they come but he lacks that stuff that don't show up on compubox

You know damn well trout ain't Floyd, and Floyd getting buckled like trout in the center of the ring is bull****!!! Lol come on bro. Floyd rarely gets caught flush like that. It's Finna be a masterclass once again. Floyd sees all the tendencies and mistakes of this kid. And him tying to correct them now???? See she you in that ring getting caugh unexpectedly you forget all that **** you been training for and you revert to the habits you have. Floyd camp even told Shane that about that pitty pat jab. But once Shane started getting timed he reverted.
