People are blinded by the Dempsey legacy. He was such a big star in USA sports, not just in boxing, but in sports that he is horrendously overrated. He couldn't beat Tunney and lost in a round to JIM FLYNN.

He was much more a personality than a top 10 HW great. Maybe in impact, but not in accomplishment. Sitting on a title and turning down fights does nothing for me.

Well nobody expected him to beat Jack Johnson, though he came in out of shape - no fault of Willard's. Both Pelkey and McCarthy were good wins, even though they were not official. He beat William Young twice, the second time he effectively killed him as he died a couple of days later or something like that.

Notated how you put it, Willard was a four year reigning undisputed champ and Dempsey beat him in three rounds. This guy was known as te toughest guy in the world and Dempsey demolished very quickly. Dempsey came in as the underdog. When has Wlad beaten someone he wasn't expected to beat?

Willard was signing circus contracts instead of defending his title. I just looked, he officially defended it once against a nobody. Some long title reign

So what if he couldn't beat Tunney? Tunney was a great fighter, way ahead of his time. A great LHW too.

Lol. Was or was Wlad not the favorite to beat both of them? Yes he was.

The odds werent that big for Willard. So it's Wlad's fault he is the fave over everyone? Smart money talks and Wlad is the best heavyweight in the world and has been for years. Dempsey was for 4 years tops then he ducked Wills and Greb
