Didn't Canelo win his first 154 title at a CW of 150 pounds vs a Welter Weight? I recall he didn't even make weight and was still awarded the belt.

Yea, because he was still a JMW.
He just had to comply to penalties to keep the fight going, but he was still in the jmw range

But the question is WHY? Why would it be on the line when the bout is at a CW? It is not a LMW bout. I don't doubt what Schaefer said - that Canelo's Ring belt will be on the line. The point is that it should NOT be on the line.

The Ring is free to declare "we will not allow the Ring belt to exchange hands at a catch weight". This is what I want them to do. It would have been bull**** if DLH had somehow beaten Hopkins to claim him as the MW champ, and it will be bull**** if the new CW King can beat Canelo.

Ring Magazine should clarify why their belt is on the line here. Because GBP wants it that way is not a good enough answer. Just because the corrupt alphabet soups will sanction a CW bout as championship fight is also not a good answer. Why would the 154 pound belt be on the line in a 152 pound fight?

Why would the 154 pound belt be on the line in a 152 pound fight? Why would the 154 pound belt be on the line in a 152 pound fight? Why would the 154 pound belt be on the line in a 152 pound fight?

What if the CW were 148... You can see how silly this is.

Why are so many ginger fans crying over a freaking pound? ginger weighted 153 pounds in his last fight, stop with the excuses because 1 pound is not going to make a difference, why don't you say $h1t when ginger was fighting jww? He is going to be taken to school anyway, beside he is going to weight like 175 pounds the night of the fight so that little pound means $h1t, he offered fraud to fight at 150 last year, and you guys were saying that fraud was ducking master duck the ginger, he gave him two more pounds and 12 M, ginger ain't $h1t...

I can't believe people watch boxing intently and don't get it.
The rules basically imply that the weight class is determined as being above the one below. In other words JMW = 147+. Any weight over 147 is JMW. There is no upper limit but when you hit above 154 you are now hitting the lower limit of the Middleweight division. If two fighters agree to fight at JMW they are agreeing to a fight at 147+ without going into the middleweight division. If two fighters want to place an upper limit on the 147+ division then that is up to them. In this instance the fight will have a limit of 152 but it is still a 147+ fight therefore it is still a recognized division of JMW.

What makes you think I am a Canelo fan? I am not. I was rooting for Trout against him. I have rooted against him in all of his previous fights.

I was furious when he fought Josesito Lopez. That bout should have never been sanctioned. It's yet another black eye for the Vegas comission that it was. And I posted about this right here on boxingscene at the time.

I have always been against belts changing hands in CW bouts. I have always criticized fighters like Pacquiao who win fake belts at CWs.

As to why someone would think 2 pounds are important, that is a whole nother discussion that has been covered many times already.

I stand corrected on two counts, however Hopkins vs. Calzaghe wasn't fought at a catchweight and Henry Armstrong never won a world title fight at a catcheweight of 140lbs.
