  • Here's a little more for you Canelo fans, defend him on this one.

By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) says he’s considering a bout on September 14th against one of the following opponents: Sergio Martinez, Alfredo Angulo or Miguel Cotto. According to Steve Kim, Canelo would have to move to 160 if he plans on fighting Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s), at least that’s what Martinez’s adviser Sampson Lewkowicz is saying

Would Canelo be interested in moving up six pounds to face someone slightly bigger than him in Sergio Martinez or would Canelo flat out say no, that he prefers to fight guys in his own weight class or smaller? It’s unknown, but what is known is that Canelo has fought an awful lot of fighters in the division below him since he picked up the WBC junior middleweight title against welterweight Matthew Hatton in 2011

Well, last night Canelo rehydrated up to a reported 172 lbs. for his 12 round unanimous decision win over WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. You can do the math.

Mayweather is fighting at around 147 when he steps inside the ring for his fights at 147, then he’d be giving up 25 pounds to Canelo if Mayeather were to fight him. Even if Mayweather was gain a little bit of weight to fight Canelo in junior middleweight, we’re still talking about 20 pounds difference between the two of them.

I think Canelo needs to forget about Mayweather because he’s too big for him. No one is asking Mayweather to fight middleweights Chavez Jr. or Golovkin and Canelo is basically a middleweight righting at junior middleweight. Why doesn’t Canelo fight Chavez Jr., Golovkin or Sergio Martinez? Those guys are his own size? I don’t see Canelo calling them out. Is it because they’re same size as him?
Trout was also over 170. That's a lot, but not crazy for SWW. If you wanna be a champ there, that's what you have to deal with.

Also, what's up with SHO showing all the undercard fight night weights, but once again not showing Floyd's?

      • Some of you guys are being way too fanboyish. I guess forums are ment for everyone to think they made their point but i mean how can anyone be mad at this fight being made, or a young hungry undefeated belt holder in canelo calling the number 1 boxer out. Who else is more deserving of the fight at 147 or 154? I consider myself a neutral fan because i like both dudes so as a boxing fan i think this fight hould def happen in september. Is this crazy talk?

It's called prize fighting for a reason.

Canelo is only 22... with an unimpressive list of opponents... he's got work to do.

No way Floyd is gonna make him millions until he pays his dues.

And if Canelo really wants to be "the man".... he's gonna have to be willing to get fleeced (80/20, 147, big ring, ect... Just like Floyd had to concede against ODL to secure that fight)

If he's willing to do that.... then he can get it in September.
I understand and respect the risks and I understand the business. I dont profit or have a fanboy stake in the sport so I am able to see bs when its there, and when it concerns Floyd it usually is.

as for the bold You must really admire a fighter that demands this from his opponents...smdh.

This is wtf im saying. I dont stream, I buy fights for my house and for the spot we throw the fight parties at. 2 PPV's is $140. I'm not trying to pay $140 to see Floyd beat the hell outta Khan. Or see him and Alexander hug each other for 12 rds.

There's no answer to it because he just wants the payday and the exposure. People act like Floyd is the only one that cares about the money but every pro fighter in the game has the same mindset.

If it was about taking on the biggest challenge possible and proving your the best in the world pound for pound you would fight Andre Ward but Andre Ward doesn't sell. Same **** with Sergio Martinez. He wants Floyd because he wants the money. Not because he wants to be the best and take on the biggest challenge out there.

But in this instance, Floyd and Canelo both bring a lot to the table and for that reason, Floyd should take the fight, school his ass and get it out of the way so people can move on to hyping up Martinez, GGG and Ward as Floyd's next opponent.

Everybody knows that writter Dan Ambrose has been writing bad about Canelo for like 1 yaer ago, he wrote like 20 articles ( not lying you can check on his page ************ the guy lost his house on a bet Canelo vs Trout and that's why he hates Canelo so much and writtes thing without facts to backup his words )

Here is my take, I write a lot too :

Cotto vs Mayweather, Cotto came into the ring against Floyd at 165 lbs., but Canelo too big?
Floyd is a Jr. Middleweight Champion, and fought a Jr. Middleweight Champion who came in to the ring at 165 lbs (Cotto), so why you don´t he fight another Jr. Middleweight champion?, If someone tells me that Cotto is not a heavy guy your totally giving me the reason that Floyd picked the weakest Jr. Middleweight boxer or at least the less dangerous Jr. Middleweight boxer of the division.
                    1) If you don´t want any business with the 154 guys, don´t mess with their division.
                    2) Doesn´t matter if you weight 200 lbs in fight night, if you can do the 154 liimit before fight day , you´re in.
                    3) Floyd has no match at 140-147, really, he has no match.
                    4) At 154 there’s a lot of guys who could give Mayweather serious problems.
                    5) If you really think you´re at a disadvantage on terms of weight, rehydration clause could be applied, almost 100% sure every boxer want his big payday against money may and they will do what floyd’s askin them.

Canelo getting in the ring with 172 pounds, was a strategy to counteract the size and built of Trout..Canelo usually gets into the ring around 166 pounds..167 with Mosley and 166 with Josesito..With floyd(if happens) they are scheming 166 and no more..For this fight Canelo would need speed and power, wich he has in this weight

Alvarez is a normal sized S.W.W. Trout, Smith, Kirkland, Foreman, Bundrage, and the likes all come in around 170lbs. Cotto was a very light and small S.W.W. and even he came in at 165 for his fights.

                      Who is the man?

Anyway, Floyd vs. Canelo is the fight that needs to happen. I would definitely favor Floyd no matter what Canelo hydrates to. It will be tough but Floyd will be fine. This fight would be the biggest and highest grossing right now. It's a no brainer.

If Floyd doesn't fight Canelo in September, I would love to see a fight on CBS. Ideally, it would be between Floyd and Bradley but that doesn't seem feasible at the moment. Floyd has to fight on CBS during this last run though. It could really do wonders for the sport and his legacy.
