Yeah no "catch weights" as long as Canelo isn't allowed to rehydrate to 175 or 180 for fight night. Floyd's good but he's a natural 147 pounder, so going to 154 and facing a guy that outweighs him by 20 or 30 pounds is pushing it.

I'd be surprised if Khan wasn't one of the final five.

Not to the hardcore fans like us but to the casuals if he stops Cotto in impressive fashion and better than Mayweaher it will be considered a bigger fight for definite.

Exactly, no different from when casuals would run their mouths on how Pacquiao beat Hatton and DLH more impressively than Floyd. All that did is ****e up the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. I think it's easy to see what an impressive performance against Cotto would do for the fight, especially if he stops him.

Both Mak and DLT, you make good points.

On one hand, the fight would be "bigger" down the line. It just would, naturally.

If Canelo were to destroy Cotto, and Mayweather fought whoever next, the fight would be a bigger event next May.

On the other hand, how many times has this "build up the fight" gone to ****? Time after time and especially this day and age.

Back in the day, this kind of thing happened a lot less and fights happened when they happened as opposed to trying to build them up.

Plus, Mayweather-Canelo would do great numbers right now anyway.

I think it should happen now but I can see why it wouldn't.

That is a trend on here and a little disturbing.

in boxing, weird **** happens everytime you try to overhype a 'super fight'...its freekin lame

remember when Zab-Floyd was a super fight when it first got signed? then Baldomir happened

remember when Juanma-Gamboa was supposed to be a 'super fight'? then Salido happened

remember when PAC-Floyd was supposed to be a 'super fight'? then Marquez happened
This is different. There were no reasons for those other fights you named. It had nothing to gain. Zab had nothing extra to gain from Baldy. Juanama had nothing to gain from fighting Salido.

Cotto is still the 3rd biggest name in the sport. Canelo is closing hard. Cotto is not shot like some say. He's not prime Cotto but he still held his own against both Floyd & Trout. A win over Cotto in devastating fashion is huge. Canelo's name is just now getting out there in the US mainsteam. The mainstream also wants another rival for Floyd.

Canelo beats Cotto and the whole mainsrteam will be telling Floyd to fight Canelo or he's a duck. They will put massive pressure on him. Even the one's who didnt fully blame him for Pac will start to say "this is 2 times now". The fight & pressure on Floyd will be much bigger in May

Canelo is only going to get better which is true but to me and I think to Floyd's team, September seems rushed for such a big fight, risk, and making the jump in weight. I think its more comfortable for them if in May
I still think he should make it happen this year. He already fought once this year and he will be in a better fighting rhythm without being as rusty as he used to be by fighting once a year. It's not like Floyd will weigh-in at the full 154 lbs, He'll probably weigh-in at 150 lbs and comes in at 152-154 lbs on fight night. 147 lbs is Floyd's best weight class and 154 lbs is Canelo's best weight class, but that doesn't matter much since Floyd has won two titles at 154 lbs. The best thing that Floyd can demand is a re-hydration clause.
