Why does beating Andre Berto earn you a Mayweather fight?

It also could have been a **** sight better, and if his resume since coming back(given he is supposed to be the best fighter and the highest paid/highest charging) is what you as a boxing fan would call decent, then there's no point to this really.

Of course it's decent. If any other fighter in the sport fought those fighters over that space of time it would be considered better than decent.

It's funny, when Mayweather returned he said he was looking to fight, Marquez (Already signed to fight him) Mosley, Cotto, Pacquaio and Ortiz and he was laughed out the building. No one would ever dream of him doing that.


Fast forward 3 years and he fights all but Pacquaio and it's considered not even decent Funny.

Then Austin Trout beats Cotto and he's considered to be a Top fighter now.

It's all just funny, to me.

The "Mayweather ducked Kosta Tszyu clan" will never be satisfied.

I have never understood why he fought Zab Judah instead of Margarito. Margarito was the logical fight to take at that point and a lot of people were wanting to see it, both with Top Rank. Judah just lost and he should have waited until he got some more wins and let it build up again.

Then again after that, when he turned down the 8 million and chose Baldomir instead.

Now, I can understand why he would do that. Margarito was of course the better fight. But Baldomir was the Champion. So I can understand it although he should have fought Margarito instead IMO.

It just seems from day 1 he was reluctant to fight him

zab did have the lineal belt and margs was the fringe wbo champ. they had also been marketing that fight in the urban areas heavily.

Margs in 2006 he was 1 or 2 fights removed from losing to daniel santos then came back and beat lujan, cintron, and someone I cant remember.

The guy is a cautious cherry-picker who both manages his career and selects his opponents extremely carefully.

zab was the lineal champ and margs was the wbo champ. In 2006, would anyone have fought margs over zab? you surely wouldn't.

It's not the same because Judah was coming off a loss and the fight with Judah didn't even make any financial sense at all.

My opinion of why he didn't fight Margarito is because he knew that the Oscar fight was round the corner and there was no way he was messing up his chance to get that.

I know Mayweather believes he can beat Margarito but I also know he knows it would have been a tough fight.

judah was on ppv if memory serves right. he had a nice little following in brooklyn. mitchell was regular hbo. i can see the appeal with the judah fight. baldomir, too, as he was the champion, awful enough to be unable to land more than a few shots on floyd over 12 rounds, and that fight was on ppv as well.

i'm not sure if the plan was to have margarito on ppv. it would have almost certainly been for less money, though.


if the mayweather camp is seen as having avoided margarito because of the risks he posed in comparison to easier fights for a similar reward, that's a notion i can understand.

I can see the appeal in the Judah fight but why fight him coming off a loss when everyone wants to see you fight Margarito? People play it off now but it was a fight a lot of people wanted to see.

Let Judah get some wins. If it was supposed to happen, it will happen down the road.

Let's say Mayweather beat Oscar and Judah beat Cotto then imagine the numbers. That should have been the plan.

true. they made a huge mistake doing so much advance promotion given zab is not reliable. I recall all the urban contemporary radio stations up here were talking about the fight.

espn had margs #1 but they were also promoting him for the ppv.

i think once floyd paid the $750k to get out of his TR deal the marg fight was essentially gone.
