Gamboa didn't look bad tonight, in my opinion. He was a little rusty, as expected, but it wasn't so terrible. Yuri's speed, power and athleticism are still there. And he took some good shots from a heavy puncher, diminishing the notion that he has a questionable chin. What I thought Gamboa suffered from most was lack of conditioning. Yuri gassed early. I was actually impressed that he was able to turn up the juice a couple of times and attempt to close the show.
Gamboa wasn't in the ring alone, however. He was making a return against a pretty decent fighter. I knew Farenas is a solid fighter, but he impressed me more than I expected. My hat's off to Michael. He handled some good blows and weathered a couple of storms while, at the same time, making his presence known. The outcome of this fight didn't surprise me at all, what I wasn't expecting was for Farenas to hang-in when Gamboa stepped on the gas.
I think it'll be much more telling how "El Ciclon" looks in his next fight or two. I expect him to look more impressive than he did against Farenas. I have no major concerns at all.Comment

I was only looking for one name...and only reason I mention it is because 50 cent was talking about Gamboa fighting him... who happens to be much bigger...was on a longer lay-off and fought and dominated JMM.
Look I like Gamboa, I rooted for him going in. He just showed a lot of rust and Farenas put on a hell of a fight and Gamboa took a lot off during the fight. I hope he has a steady rise back up, he will be in shambles if the fights 50 wants for him happen, and I'd like to see him progress more, and make a better name for himself before being subjected to that.Comment

That garbage "50" was spouting was done for publicity. Mayweather is currently fighting at 154; Gamboa just stepped back up to 130. Let's see what Yuri looks like in his next fight before drawing conclusions. He looked just fine tonight, in my opinion, considering the circumstances.Comment

You still haven't mentioned any names. Are you thinking Floyd? He's the premiere talent in the sport. Now that his prime rival has been demolished, Mayweather stands alone at the top. I don't think it's fair to compare Yuri's performance after a long layoff to someone as unique as Floyd.

I feel that exposure put unnecessary expectations on Gamboa, which is why people are underrating his ability like you're seeing. He can get back to being a top guy if he puts his nose to the grindstone and does it the old fashion way, not using ploys from his promoter. That's how I feel on it.Comment

Yes floyd. I said Gamboa looked rusty, I didn't say he was a bad fighter. I felt he took a lot of rest when he could have pushed and maybe got a KO. 50's garbage got a lot of people talking about possibly him and floyd or broner. People talking might push to get a fight made, which I think would be terrible for Gamboa at this point. Like I said he needs to put in more work and rebuild himself back up, and unnecessary comments comparing him to Floyd will not help that. Using his name might get you exposure but its not something you want when you're rusty/rebuilding if you're not going to look your best.

I think that the rest in action you're referring to was due to Gamboa's conditioning. I'm sure Yuri has been training hard, but he gassed early. I would say he was already showing signs of being tired by the fourth round. It may have had something to do with tension. Nervousness and stress takes a lot out of you.
Gamboa seemed tense to me from the moment he stepped into the ring. I was hoping he would loosen up after the first round or two (and he seemed to), but he lost steam too early to make it count. I fully expect an improvement in his next fight.Comment

This was classic Gamboa. He is a very frustrating fighter, because he just fights so sloppily when he's in the ring with such lesser opponents. He looked like he wasn't even trying to fight in some rounds. Definitely a gutsy fight from Farenas.Comment

I'll be frank. There were a couple of moments in that fight were, in retrospect, I had almost portentous visions. I could almost vibe what happened to Manny happening to Yuri. It wasn't a good feeling.
Gamboa was being a little too overconfident. I agree, he gets bored with sub-par opposition sometimes and goes into sparring mode. Yuri is so blessed with great fighting qualities that he sometimes goes on autopilot.
It's also a bit of bravado, I think. When his opponent doesn't fold like a cheap suit, Gamboa sometimes wants to make it look like he's not actually trying. Farenas wasn't just going away, and Yuri isn't quite up to speed yet to smash a determined fighter.Comment
