I give Farenas respect! Gamboa was good until the later rounds, his performance just went down.

Some rounds Gamboa came out pressuring Farenas, then he stops the flurries after he gets tagged once.

I'll be frank. There were a couple of moments in that fight were, in retrospect, I had almost portentous visions. I could almost vibe what happened to Manny happening to Yuri. It wasn't a good feeling.

Gamboa was being a little too overconfident. I agree, he gets bored with sub-par opposition sometimes and goes into sparring mode. Yuri is so blessed with great fighting qualities that he sometimes goes on autopilot.

It's also a bit of bravado, I think. When his opponent doesn't fold like a cheap suit, Gamboa sometimes wants to make it look like he's not actually trying. Farenas wasn't just going away, and Yuri isn't quite up to speed yet to smash a determined fighter.
Meh, I'm so used to Gamboa fighting that way, I wasn't ever worried. He does look like he gets bored after a few rounds against almost everyone he fights. It's a testament to how good he is that he can do that, and has done it against solid fighters and won easily.

What were your impressions of Gamboa on his return, Bo?

I think the problem with Yuri is competition, I don't think he gets up for fights like this one IMO, if there is a fight that people think he would lose then I think a fight like that one would bring the best out of him.

I agree. But you can say that about a lot of people. Your thoughts on how Yuri looked, Ray?

He looked fine. To me, it looked like he was trying to put in rounds, I don't know how else to explain the way he would stop fighting. Not his greatest night, but no one should have expected his greatest night after so long off. I do think he would be just fine at lightweight, he was as fast as ever at 130.

I agree on almost everything. I have no worries about Gamboa going forward. But I don't think Yuri was trying to put in rounds (although it might be a good thing he did). I thought he gassed early and just didn't have enough to take out a tough and determined opponent. The more I think of it, the more I'm convinced that Gamboa was experiencing a lot of tension. I believe it must've taken a lot out of him.

It was a hell of a fight, but it's really not a very good win for a guy that is considered to be up the very top of P4P potential guys today. He's in his prime, at his peak years at 30.

He fought like a complete moron. I don't doubt a fair bit of it was rust, but whenever he threw the right hand, at all, he would leave it out there and drop it straight down by his waist, admiring his work instead of admiring the left hand counter that was often coming back to hit him flush in the face. He's a KO waiting to happen.

lol Yeah, Gamboa posed a lot, as he often does. On another note, Yuri showed he doesn't have a bad chin after all. He usually doesn't get hit very much. Farenas landed a few hard shots, and Gamboa handled them well. Michael is pretty heavy-handed, so he was a decent test of Yuri's beard.

I don't know man. I think he was expecting the guy to be gone within two or three rounds. He was thinking it would be a quick comeback fight, as a tune up, before going after bigger names. Instead he got a determined, hard punching guy who refused to go.

He wasn't properly up for such a stringent test mentally, and you could see him visibly wilt around round 4 and 5 after getting tagged a few times. I think he was very tired and could only fight in spurts.
