Why because of the win over 1 name fighter at that weight the rematch over the career middleweight Taylor. The same Pavlik who was still the linear mw champion and had no intention of jumping to SMW?

Is that the Pavlik you're talking about? Or was the a different guy that tore up the division undercover?

Seriously I say some snarky stuff on here but it's lighthearted other are straight morons with their boxing knowledge.

Pavlik was never a factor at SMW when Joe was the champion. That's like saying Ward can' move up to lt heavy because his biggest challenge at SMW is Sergio even though Sergio at this point shows no indication of moving up.

How dare you challenge me with your primitive boxing knowledge.
You realize undefeated Pavlik vs undefeated Calzaghe would have been a huge fight and at the time, that's the fight the public wanted? Even calzaghe himself said he was going to fight pavlik during a press conference.

It matters little what pavlik WENT ON TO DO TO HIS CAREER after the fact. The choice for Calzaghe was undefeated Pavlik, or shot to ***** Roy Jones. He chose jones. Pavlik wanted to fight Calzaghe.

Also, keep in mind Pavlik was viewed as a big threat. And again whether or not that was reality means nothing because we're talking about at that time. Pavlik was a 4-1 favorite over hopkins, which by the way shows the huge contrast of Hopkins and Calzaghe. While Hopkins wanted a rematch with Calzaghe and was turned down, Hopkins goes on to fight the younger, undefeated fighter that Calzaghe turned down and many thought would knock him out. Hopkins had courage and took risks, Calzaghe took very, very few.

Joe Calzaghe Turns Down Kelly Pavlik, Picks Roy Jones Jr.

      By Mark Vester

Undisputed super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe has gone on the record to turn down the challenge of WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, and says that a fight with former four-division champ Roy Jones Jr. is the right move for November 15.

The two sides, Top Rank and Calzaghe's promoter Frank Warren, have been discussing the Calzaghe-Pavlik for several weeks. Talks heated up when Pavlik demolished Calzaghe's stablemate Gary Lockett last week in Atlantic City.

"A lot of people would love to see it. However, at this point, I think it's unlikely. I'm not sure if Pavlik really wants to face me at the moment," Calzaghe told BBC Sport. "He would have little to gain because I believe I would definitely beat him and, with respect to Gary Lockett, I would be a step-up too far for Pavlik."

"Talks are ongoing about me facing Roy Jones, a genuine legend of boxing and a previous four-weight world champion. That is a fight that I think can be made. Pavlik's got the world at his feet at middleweight or super-middleweight and will want to build his unbeaten record, rather than stepping up at least one weight category to face me. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that we will face each other, but I think Jones is the right fight for me at the moment."

Pavlik is pushing for the fight, Warren says the decision is not up t o Pavlik.

"It would be a great fight for Joe," admitted Calzaghe's promoter Frank Warren. "But it's up to Joe, not Kelly Pavlik, whether the fight will happen."

The loss of a bout with Calzaghe, eyed for October, will send Pavlik back to Plan A - a September return against Marco Antonio Rubio or Ricardo Mayorga.

lmao kelly pavlik still isn't even a name at 168 now let alone 4 years ago.

calzaghe had already moved to 175 so that ship had sailed, he would have got no credit for whooping pavlik's ass anyway.

pavlik wasn't a name 4 years ago? We're you even watching boxing? Everyone wanted Pavlik vs Calzaghe and Pavlik was willing to fight Joe higher than 160 (duh he ended up fighting hopkins at 170). Pavlik was one the most popular american fighters at the time.

But of course a shot Roy Jones was the logical choice for Calzaghe. Always taking challenges!

What kind of dumb ass question is that? How is that relivant to fighting Palvik-Calzaghe?

oh so when Dawson moves down in weight he's weight drained, but 43 year old Hopkins moves down in weight, beats Pavlik and that's no problem. Riiiiiggghht. Plus, Pavlik wanted to KO hopkins, he agreed. Only has himself to blame for getting his but kicked.

But I see what you're doing. Trying to deflect the attention from Joe, who could have fought an undefeated pound 4 pound fighter and instead chose a shot jones.
