    Of course.

No one is unbeatable. Not Robinson, not Greb, not Armstrong etc etc etc.

Just because you're an older great, it doesn't mean you automatically beat a newer fighter. Not at all.

But the same applies the other way round.

THE RING's FIGHT OF THE YEAR- Harry Greb W15 Gene Tunney

Tunney, the newly crowned American light heavyweight champion, takes a 15-round beating from Greb. His nose broken, and badly cut over both eyes, Tunney somehow stays on his feet until the final bell. He'll later say of his only defeat, : I never learned as much in any single fight."

that's what undoubtedly seals his greatness for me. there's no way he was a bum in order to be able to do that. no way.

          I agree with this.

Something Ive been meaning to talk to Jab about is creating some kind of all time weight class h2h tournament that posters can vote on. Id love to see who would end up on top in the different divisions.

Yeah I agree, people keep on questioning the video but I think everyone who has seen Tunney fight agrees that he was an all time great and very highly skilled, Greb was the only man to beat him and you need to be a great to pull off something like that.

indeed, especially considering greb's size (the video gives a good scale of that.)

tunney is one of, if not the greatest LHW of all time, and was the heavyweight champion of the world.

                larry,
you shouldn't ever bring up a resume again, considering that you refuse to recognize it in greb's case. what the hell is a resume, anyway? total nonsense, that's what. if it's not filmed, it did not happen.

well we don't have that. its boxing's holy grail for a reason. we got the next best thing in footage of guys he's fought to gauge how good he might have been, on greb's site, and on youtube using boxrec as a tool if you've got the time.

its all about preserving history & culture. A lot of these old school vanguards love to put these guys we have never seen fight before in some ridiculous pedestal just so they can preserve their history & culture.

If you look at who is the greatest athletes in every sport, the consensus greatest always comes from modern time. Its always the modern athlete (1970 & up imo).

                    Track & field:

From Jim thorpe to jesse owens to car lewis to usain bolt.

                    Tennis:

From Rod Laver to Bjorn Borg to Pete Sampras to Roger Federer

                    Basketball:

From George Mikan to Wilt to Dr. J to Bird & Magic to MJ

                    Baseball

From Ty cobb to Babe Ruth to Mickey Mantle/Willie Mays to Griffey/Barry Bonds

                    Football:

From otto graham to bart starr to Johnny unitas to montana/marino/elway to brady/brees/manning

The consensus greatest always comes in modern time not someone from the damn 1910s, 20s, & 30s. This is true not just in sports but in almost all aspects of life. A special forces soldier these days is deadlier than a special forces soldier in ww1. Its called the passage of time. It gives you knowledge of the previous time to improve upon.

                    Harry Greb=Babe Ruth=George Mikan

White athletes who were great because black athletes were not playing yet & those who played were at a severe disadvantage due to racial politics. If you notice as civil rights were slowly being given to african americans, the number of great african american athletes increased while the number of great white athletes decreased.

Coincidence much? I dont think so.

My god, boxers are still getting robbed today due to politics & its freaking 2012. The era of social media, political correctness, & fake outrage.

How many african american athletes were getting screwed back then when they didnt even have civil rights?

The days of newspaper decisions, referees also acting as judge, jury, & executioner cannot be taken seriously imo. & some of you posters judging greatness based on word of mouth from journalist & fellow contemporaries have got to be kidding me.

Can you imagine if floyd, manny, & lets say mike tyson fought in a era were what their opponents said about them & what journalists said about them, what fans said about them were the main criteria for greatness? YOu would think these guys were robotic aliens from the future that cannot be touched. Just think of all the journalistic sensationalism hyperbole written about these guys. Can you honestly say they are accurate?

The modern athlete is greater. You prune juice drinking, pureed apple sauce slurping old geezers will just have to deal with it.

                    Athletic Evolution.

Its true greatness cannot be denied.
