    Victor Ortiz in a nutshell:
He does not have the intestinal fortitude to persevere through the tough situations necessary to succeed in the higher levels of the sport. He should consider himself lucky. With his mental approach, Canelo would destroy him.

I'm not being cruel. I know a broken jaw is no minor injury. But this is boxing. The sport requires coping with pain and other physical hardships. Timothy Bradley finished his fight with Manny Pacquiao with a fractured foot.

In addition, this is a consistent issue with Ortiz. When he's in tough fights, he fouls or quits. In this fight, he did both. Earlier in the fight, when Lopez was more than competitive, Ortiz blatantly punched him in the back of the head.

Yes, he could'v continued, and there's absolutely no debating otherwise. A broken jaw is a very common injury in boxing, yes it's painful as hell, but fighters are expected to fight through physical and mental anguish and they do so all the time. Using the broken jaw as an example, Abraham finished his fight with Miranda with a broken jaw, Ali finished his with Norton, Jose Diaz finished his with Miguel Munguia, Pernell Whitaker finished his fight with Felix Trinidad, Ray Mercer finished his fight with Bert Cooper, Tommy Morrison finished his fight with Joe Hipp, Sonny Liston finished his fight with Marty Marshall, etc, etc, etc....

The list of fighters who've fought through injury (whether it's broken jaws, sprained ankles, torn muslces, etc...) is as long and storied as the history of the sport itself, and all of you morons acting like a broken jaw is a life threatening injury and that Ortiz was in grave danger in there are just making it easier for the kid to make excuses for quitting on us.....again.

His own choice... The fact is this is the 3rd fight he has chosen to quite because of his frustration or injury. To most fighters; what happens when you get hurt in the ring and what you do from there is what defines you!

It's unfortunate for him, that he will be known for quitting in every lose he has had... So far!

That's where I see the difference.

There's fighters out there that not only continue fighting with a broken jaw, but continue fighting to simply lose a decision.

Ortiz was winning the fight on my card and most likely the judges card and had only 3 rounds to go and instead he called it a day.

I understand his decision, but I guess that's just where some fighters vary. Put some other fighters in that exact same position and they would have continued.

For me it was more the way he did it.

If that was me and I really felt I couldn't go on, I would at least try and save face and explicitly tell my trainer he needed to stop it. He just shamelessly doesn't give a *****.

Ortiz, defying his corner, called the ref over and was like stop the fight my jaws broken. Is he nuts, is he not aware of his own reputation? Danny Garcia didn't wanna let Ortiz talk with Jim Gray afterwords cause he knew Ortiz was likely to say something that made him look ****** again i.e Maidana fight.

What no-one has mentioned is Ortiz' could have rectified his reputation as a quitter a little bit if he fought through this.

In the same way Duran did after he didn't let his corner stop him from going out to fight Hearns in round 2 after being thoroughly destroyed in the first.

The problem is not the Jaw but the heart and his mental issues.
Why putting up a fake Hollywood act if he had a so called justified injury?
I believed he was trying to walk to Lopez to congratulate him like we have seen fighters do when they are unable to continue in a fight. Oscar vs Pac for example.

He could have continued but he chose not to.

I dont know if there are different types of breaks with a jaw. My thoughts were whether if he couldnt close his mouth, he wouldnt have been able to have his gum shield put back in, therefore couldnt have continued.
But i guess thats not the reason why he quit. He quit because it hurt to move and he didnt want to take anymore.

                    FYI,

The 3 judges had it at the time of stoppage (as per boxrec):

                    Ortiz: 86-85
                    Ortiz: 87-84
                    Ortiz: 88-83

If he was Mayweather, Hopkins, Whitaker, Ward, Abraham, Winky, sure.

But with his defense? Hell f-cking no. He would have finished the fight with no jaw. You can't miss Orti'z face. Opponents average 32-34% landed punches on him. That's way too much for a guy with a broken jaw.

If he had defense like the guys I mentioned, then yes. But he has 0 defense.
